| Effects of Interpretation Techniques on Land-use Mapping Accuracy |
MAR 1980 |
| Authors:
Floyd M. Henderson; STATE UNIV OF NEW YORK AT ALBANY
 | Three study areas in the southern U. S. were employed to examine effects of selected interpretation techniques on land-use mapping accuracy. Using the USGS hierarchial classification system, 9 different interpretation methods based on a grid cell matrix were used to determine which methods were most accurate and were used to pinpoint variations. Best results were not always obtained with the smallest grid cell; interpretation techniques less complex than stratified systematic ... |

| Authors:
George T. Moore; CHEVRON OIL FIELD RESEARCH CO LA HABRA CA*
 | On April 9, l976, the LANDSAT 2 satellite made one of its many passes over the Mississippi delta and offshore. A composite image made captures the complex interplay of major dynamic processes at an instant of geologic time. The vivid color contrast and spatial detail of the image permit the user easily to expand the time frame by several orders of magnitude. With a minimum of geologic imagination one can ... |

| A COMPARISON OF POLYNOMIAL AND FOURIER MODELS IN MAP ANALYSIS. |
JUN 1966 |
| Authors:
W. C. Krumbein; NORTHWESTERN UNIV EVANSTON ILL DEPT OF GEOLOGY
 | The problem of selecting an optimum model for trend analysis of mapped data involves the question of the structure of a single observation under various models. The commonly used polynomial functions structure the data in such a way that a succession of fitted surfaces, linear, quadratic, cubic, etc., can be constructed. The less commonly used but increasingly popular Fourier series model structures the data to produce a series of harmonic ... |

 | The following observations and tentative conclusions are based on the first summer's study of Glenn Creek and its drainage basin: (1) relationships comprising at-a-station hydraulic geometry are similar to those for larger streams in other areas; (2) the lag time between rainfall and peak storm discharge is much longer for Glenn Creek than for similar-sized streams in mid-latitude regions; (3) hydrograph recessions are drawn out in time relative to those ... |

 | To evaluate the adequacy of the Yuma Proving Ground as a test site representative of world desert conditions, the extent of occurrence of Yuma terrain types in the Northwest African (NWA) and other world desert areas must be determined. In order to make valid comparisons, a uniform system of describing, mapping, and comparing desert terrain must be employed. In this report both the Yuma and NWA deserts are mapped in ... |

 | This bibliography is believed to contain approximately 75% of the most pertinent literature on the subject of beach features and related nearshore processes. Specific fields covered are outlined in the table of contents. The material is listed by subject and by name of author. The fact that about 80 per cent of the references are post-1940 reflects a lack of beach process research prior to World War II. A number ... |

 | An appraisal of the status of existing environmental data held by the major cognizant Federal and state agencies indicates that voluminous, unpublished data in various stages of processing exist for all pertinent categories of information. The data are generally filed in local, state, or regional offices, and the practical difficulties in obtaining such information are significant. Adequate fulfillment of OCD environmental data requirements centers around establishing an effective organization structure ... |

| An Approach to Seismic Zoning in Southern New England |
| Authors:
Peter G. Waldo; SOIL CONSERVATION SERVICE WASHINGTON D C*
 | An approach to seismic zoning was developed for an area bounded by latitudes 41 deg N and 44 deg N and longitudes 70 deg W and 75 deg W. The definition of seismic zones requires a thorough study of the earthquake record. The record for the study area was found to be deficient in comparison with modern capabilities of earthquake reporting. However, statistical procedures help improve the estimates of earthquake ... |
