|
 | The formation of bacterial endospores in the living animal body has not been reported. [In 1958-1S80: M. Taylor, Fort Detrick, observed (unpublished data), through several weeks, anthrax spores produced in the cecum of a germ-free Lobund rat after challenge.] General opinion is that it does not occur. We have found, however, that in vivo-formed spores of several species of bacilli may be demonstrated in the chicken egg embryo. |

| THE GROWTH OF ASIBI STRAIN YELLOW FEVER VIRUS IN TISSUE CULTURES. II. MODIFICATION OF VIRUS AND CELLS |
NOV 1962 |
16 pages |
| Authors:
FRANK M. HARDY; ARMY BIOLOGICAL LABS FREDERICK MD
|
 | Passage of the parent Asibi strain yellow fever virus in HeLa cell culture through six consecutive passages produced a variant (H-6) that, unlike P virus: (a) induced cytopathic effect in HeLa and chick fibroblast cell cultures, (b) became more virulent for mice, and (c) lost its ''viscerotropic'' character for the monkey. Chronic infection of HeLa cells with P virus was established for a two-month period. The virus obtained from this ... |

|
 | The high concentrations and products of calcium and phosphate ions in the blood and extracellular fluid of boneless lower vertebrates are associ ated with low body temperatures, high ionic strengths of the solution, low serum alkaline phosphatase activity, and other variable factors that decrease the chemical activity and se the solubility of calcium phosphate salts. In all researches dealing with lower vertebrates, it is absolutely essential to take into considera ... |

|
 | Neopanope texana sayi, Hexapanopeus angustifrons, and Piluminus sayi have been reared in isolation from eggs through the first crab stage with about 80% survival. These species hatched in the laboratory as first zoeae and underwent three more zoeal stages and one megalopal stage before metamorphosis to the first crab stage. The duration of the larval stages was twice as long when the zoeae were fed Artemia nauplii plus algae, as ... |

| Authors:

|
 | The osmoregulatory abilities of adult and embryonic Cymatogaster aggregata were tested by determining serum freezing points and weight changes after exposure to dilutions of sea water ranging between 15 and 100%. The ability of embryos to regulate is proportional to their stage of development. The youngest animals tested regulate only in media with values between 25 and 36% sea water. Similar though less extensive experiments were performed with adult Amphistichus ... |

21 NOV 1960 |
|
| Authors:
VIRGINIA L. BLACKFORD; NAVAL MEDICAL RESEARCH INST BETHESDA MD
|
 | The factors influencing the growth of Coxiella burnetti in chick embryo entodermal cell monolayers were investigated. The methods of preparation and infection of the cultures and determination of extent of rickettsial growth were similar, but somewhat simpler than those reported by Weiss and Pietryk (1956). The addition of Morgan's mixture 199 or the constituents of Eagle's medium to a basal medium composed of untreated chicken serum and Hanks' BBS significantly ... |

04 NOV 1960 |
|
| Authors:
Francis B. Gordon; ALICE L. QUAN; NAVAL MEDICAL RESEARCH INST BETHESDA MD
|
 | The Eaton agent of primary atypical pneumonia was carried through two series of 10 and 6 passages respectively, in chick entodermal cell cultures, indicating growth of the agent in this cell system. Cytopathic effects were not seen and fluorescent antibody staining of the infected cells by the indirect method was negative. The agent was demonstrated in fluids from the infected cultures by subinoculation to chick embryos and fluorescent antibody staining ... |

 | During the past few years a number of experimental studies appeared in Soviet and foreign literature reporting variability phenomena among many species of rickettsiae pathogenic to humans. The present state of the problem of variability of rickettsiae is described thoroughly by P. F. Zdrodovskiy (1959) in his review of Soviet and foreign research. Among the experimental works related to the variability of rickettsiae, those studies deserve the most attention which ... |

 | Cross-complement fixation tests indicated slight differences in the titer of hyperimmune guinea pig sera against LF, Z, and EB strains of the Herpes simplex virus. Human sere showed marked differences among these 3 and 5 other strains. Hyperimmune guinea pig sera were adsorbed with crude infective mouse-brain suspensions and tested for neutralizing antibodies in mice and chick embryos. Neutralizing antibodies were removed or greatly reduced, and no antigenic differences were ... |

 | A study was made of relationships between tissue culture and in fluenza virus with radioactive phosphorus as the indicator system. Lee, PR8, and Thompson influenza virus strains were absorbed and eluted from normal chicken red blood cells (rbc's). When a constant amount of inorganic radioactive phosphorus was added to the rbc's, the virus-treated cells acquired more phosphorus than cells treated with normal allantoic fluid. The yolks of 7-day-old chick embryos ... |

 | A review is given of the effects of external whole body and local irradiation in man and experimental animals. Internal irradiation by radioactive substances in man and experimental animals is considered. An abstract of pertinent findings is given in the summary and conclusions. All investigators are in agreement that blood formation occurs embryologically in an identical manner in all mammals. It consists of a condensation in the yolk sac of ... |

 | During fetal development, a complex interaction between numerous growth factors, receptors, and signaling pathways takes place to establish the regulation of the various hormonal and metabolic functions necessary for normal development, both during the fetal period as well as later in life. Alterations in the fetal environment during this time can modify normal gene expression, protein concentrations, metabolic cascades, and other physiologic functions. Exposure to excess prenatal androgens has been ... |
