Both crystalline botulinum toxin, type A (molecular weight 900,000) and a form of lower molecular weight (approx. 130,000) derived from it have four -SH groups and approximately one disulfide bridge per 100,000 grams of protein. Both forms were increasingly inactivated over a 24-hour period to one-tenth of the original toxicity by p-mercuribenzoate, but iodacetamide caused a smaller reduction and N-ethylmaleimide had no effect at all. Reversal of the p-mercuribenzoate inactivation ...
To detect botulin in foodstuffs the indirect hemagglutination reaction was used. This reaction proved to be a rather rapid and sensitive method of laboratory diagnosis. It cannot, however, replace completely the biological test. In experiments with weak toxins this method appeared much more sensitive, as compared to the biological test, but in experiments with strong toxins it was inferior to the latter. With the aid of indirect hemagglutination reaction it ...
Anthrax toxin depressed the cerebral cortical electrical activity of both anesthetized and nonanesthetized monkeys. Concurrent recordings on a physiograph recorder revealed changes in their electrocardiogram and anoxic hypertension that progressed with the degree of intoxication to final cardiovascular collapse. Changes in cortical activity were either partial or complete, and in some cases cortical activity was followed by depression in cyclic patterns that appeared independent of the physiological changes. Those animals ...
