The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only.A series of fumers based on magnesium/strontium peroxide was tested at the Naval Surface Weapon Center's Hypersonic Tunnel to see the effect of varying the parameters that control the rate of combustion of pyrotechnics. The parameters that were varied included spin rate, fuel content, fuel particle size, the oxidizer, and the addition of burning rate additivies (calcium resinate, polyvinylchloride, oxamide, and gelatin). The base drag reductions measured for all the ...

Effects of Environmental and Processing Conditions on Composition and Sensitivity of HC White Smoke Mix. MAR 1975 24 pages
Authors:  J. F. Pankow; G. L. McKown; GENERAL ELECTRIC CO BAY SAINT LOUIS MS ENGINEERING AND SCIENCE SERVICES LAB
The full text of this report is available for sale.A series of experiments were performed to determine environmental condition effects of HC white smoke mix. Temperature, humidity level, blending rates and time were found to have minimal effect on input sensitivities and energy release. Significant findings were; gross sublimation of hexachloroethane from stored samples; large inhomogeneities in the blended samples; and inconsistencies in impact sensitivities of all samples compared to previous results. Explosive Classification Testing for Pyrotechnic Bulk Composition and End Items. MAR 1975 34 pages
Authors:  Fred L. McIntyre; GENERAL ELECTRIC CO BAY SAINT LOUIS MS ENGINEERING AND SCIENCE SERVICES LAB
The full text of this report is available for sale. Results of classification testing in accordance with US Army Technical Bulletin 700-2 Change, Chapters 3 and 4. Three bulk compositions and two end item munitions were tested. Additional results of all bulk pyrotechnic composition tested to date are included in appendix C of this report. (Author)

Chemical Effects of Doping on the Litharge Silicon System, JAN 1974
Authors:  Charles A. Lipscomb Jr; NAVAL AMMUNITION DEPOT CRANE IN
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only.Litharge may experience noticeable and drastic alterations in its reaction with silicon depending on the presence, extent and nature of dopant species in either or both the litharge and the silicon. Reactivity differences were measured as enthalpy of the following reaction PbO + Si yields SiO + Pb which reaction is confirmed by X-ray diffraction of product species. (Author)

Flame Propagation Parameters of Pyrotechnic Delay and Ignition Compositions, 31 DEC 1971
Authors:  James E. Rose; NAVAL ORDNANCE STATION INDIAN HEAD MD
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only.Heat of explosion, ignition temperature, and McLain Propagation Index, PI, defined as heat of explosion divided by ignition temperature, are correlated for various pyrotechnic delay and ignition compositions. A novel propagation index, described by heat of explosion, ignition temperature, burning rate, and density is proposed as a comparative screening criterion for pyrotechnic compositions. (Author)

THE CATALYSIS OF THERMAL DECOMPOSITION AND BURNING REACTIONS OF FUEL-OXIDANT COMPOSITIONS. MAY 1968 73 pages
Authors:  Eli S. Freeman; Winfried K. Rudloff; IIT RESEARCH INST CHICAGO IL
The full text of this report is available for sale. The effects of defect structure and doping of potassium chlorate on its chemical reactivity with respect to its propagative reactions with sulfur was investigated. The preparation of doped single crystals of potassium chlorate was continued during the entire program. The crops of single crystals were analyzed for their dopant contents. The influence of doping on the thermal decomposition of potassium chlorate was investigated by DTA and TGA. The effect of ...

IGNITION TEMPERATURES. I. STANDARD PYROTECHNIC MIXTURE AND COMPONENTS. OCT 1967
Authors:  Joseph J. Kokalas; Julius B. Miller; Robert Breschi; EDGEWOOD ARSENAL ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND MD
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only.A laboratory apparatus for the determination of the ignition temperatures of pyrotechnic mixtures that is based upon differential thermal analysis (DTA) has been designed, constructed, and tested. It has been evaluated by obtaining thermograms of a standard pyrotechnic mixture and each of its components. The temperatures for the crystalline transitions and melting points obtained from the DTA curves of the components of the pyrotechnic mixture were found to agree with ...

BLACK BODY FUNCTIONS FOR PYROTECHNICISTS, MAR 1967
Authors:  R. M. Blunt; DENVER RESEARCH INST COLO
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only.Planck's black body data is tabulated. The data is presented from 0.35 microns to 12.0 microns in increments of 0.005 microns and at temperatures from 1500K through 4050K in 50K increments. Hemispherical power, power normalized to peak, spectral brightness, temperature exponent M, and cumulative and percentage of power between zero and the listed wavelength. In addition, graphs of the temperature exponent vs temperature and vs wavelength are included. (Author)

CHEMICAL LASER PUMP, JUN 1966
Authors:  John L. Wright; FELTMAN RESEARCH LABS PICATINNY ARSENAL DOVER N J
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only. The sharply defined bright zone produced by the detonation of a cyanogen-oxygen mixture in small test vehicles looks promising as a pump for solid-state lasers such as neodymium-doped glass and ruby. Brightness temperatures between 6000 to 7000 K are routinely obtained. By adding inert depants such as argon, xenon and helium to the mixture, brightness temperatures in the vicinity of 8000K have been attained. The combustion or detonation that takes ...

PYROTECHNIC HARASSMENT DEVICE. MAR 1966 89 pages
Authors:  Richard C. Grimm ; Douglas P. Davis; SPECIAL DEVICES INC NEWHALL CALIF
The full text of this report is available for sale. This report presents the analysis of sounds and the artificial synthesization of such with pyrotechnic devices. It includes the development of these devices and their incorporation into a single unit capable of delivery from the SUU-13/A dispenser.

THE EFFECTS OF PROCESSING ON PYROTECHNIC INGREDIENTS. PART I: COMPRESSIBILITY OF POWDERED MAGNESIUM AND SODIUM NITRATE AT CONSOLIDATION PRESSURES TO 10,000 PSI. SEP 1965 25 pages
Authors:  Doris E. Middlebrooks; Seymour M. Kaye; PICATINNY ARSENAL DOVER NJ FELTMAN RESEARCH LABS
The full text of this report is available for sale.Nonreproducibility of illuminance levels and burning rates has long been a problem with pyrotechnic compositions. One aspect of this problem is the effects of blending and consolidation on the shape and size of the particles. If the effects of consolidation pressure on particle size, permeability, or porosity vary excessively, such variations may cause nonreproducible end-item performance. An investigation revealed that increasing the loading pressures to 10,000 psi on 44, 124 ...
