GENESIS OF ACTION POTENTIALS IN EXCITABLE TISSUES. 30 MAY 1967
Authors:  Torsten Teorell; UPPSALA UNIV (SWEDEN) INST OF PHYSIOLOGY AND MEDICAL BIOPHYSICS
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only. The work was concerned with the nature of the possible coupling between electrochemical and hydrostatic forces in excitable cell membranes and on the nature of selectivity properties of gel polymer cell models. (1) A model for mechanoelectrical transduction was investigated on the electrohydraulic nerve analog. The problems were centered on the definition of the 'threshold' concepts. By means of analog computation and methods from non-linear mechanics a certain clarification was ...

ALTERATION OF THE PENETRABILITY OF SKIN. 27 APR 1967
Authors:  Leonard J. Vinson; Javier J. Bulgin; Marjorie D. Lehman; Edward J. Singer; Thomas Masurat; LEVER BROS CO EDGEWATER NJ RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT DIV
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only.Oxidized lipid-protein complexes were investigated as a means of increasing the barrier properties of skin. Membranes were formed from these complexes, and the optimum lipid to protein ratios was from 1 to 2 parts (by weight) protein to 2.5 parts (by volume) lipid. Incorporation of cholesterol in these membranes lowered the water permeability of the membrane to values found for natural stratum corneum. The membranes showed greater resistance to the ...

ACTIVE TRANSPORT OF IONS. 27 JAN 1965
Authors:  Edward J. Conway; UNIVERSITY COLL DUBLIN (IRELAND) UNIT OF CELL METABOLISM
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only. The interpretation given to active transport of ions is their movement from a lower to a higher chemical or electrochemical potential, work being done in the process. This process can be represented as occuring in stages: (a) Firstly the ion attaches itself to a carrier. This attachment involves electrical adsorption to an ion or ions of opposite charge. Also, in order to enter into or cross membrane barriers the complex ...

TRANSPORT OF MACROMOLECULES ACROSS BIOLOGICAL MEMBRANES. 31 AUG 1947
Authors:  R. C. Bean; PHILCO-FORD CORP NEWPORT BEACH CA AERONUTRONIC DIV
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only.In general, it may be safe to assume that, for small molecules, the study of transport relations may become a study of the energy of transition between aqueous and lipid phase, but the multitude of forces may make an extremely complex analysis necessary. For the case of the macromolecule, even more complexity will be involved, since the disturbance of the membrane lattice may be much larger than that in the ...
