Measurements of possible lightning-induced voltages on several electrical circuits within an F4H-1 aircraft are reported. The measurements were made using the transient analysis technique in which simulated lightning currents identical in waveshape but reduced in amplitude from that of natural lightning are passed through the aircraft. The resulting induced voltages are than scaled upward in direct proportion to natural lightning amplitude. When scaled to a scale lightning stroke of 200,000 ...

Data on lightning incidence are first examined. Expressions are derived relating lightning incidence to the monthly thunderstorm-day statistic, to diurnal variation of activity, and to structure height. By using these expressions the number of lightning strikes to be expected over any period of time can be estimated, on a climatological basis, for a structure of known height located anywhere in the world. The following physical parameters of lightning are then ...

One of the objectives is to characterize those transients occurring on the power distribution system of Navy shore stations which can be directly correlated with observed lightning phenomena. Isabela, Puerto Rico, was chosen as the transient monitoring site because of the high incidence of lightning during the months of August and September each year. Accordingly, this monitoring trip was scheduled and completed between August 16 and September 27, 1971. This ...

The report presents abstracts of unclassified papers presented at the Lightning and Static Electricity Conference, 3 - 5 December 1968. These papers discuss problems of lightning and static electricity as they pertain to aerospace vehicles. Research to solve these problems conducted by numerous US and foreign agencies, both governmental and industrial, is discussed. (Author)

| Analysis was carried out of relations between lightning discharges and musical atmospherics of usual whistler type and of unusual forms. Recording cathode-ray oscillographs were used for analysis of the relations. Cathode-ray oscillographic direction finders placed at two stations at suitable distances allowed determination of the sources of the lightning discharges in relation to musical atmospherics.
