This information is provided for reference purposes only.The objective of the investigation is the development of new thermoplastic and thermosetting resins from phosphonitrilic chloride trimer for high temperature electrical applications. Polymers were prepared by linking together bifunctional phenyl-and phenoxysubstituted trimeric phosphonitriles. Linking groups include oxygen, nitrogen, hydroquinone, tetrahydroxyaromatics and groups derived from the reaction of phosphonitrile isocyanates with glycols or diamines. This information is provided for reference purposes only.Stress cycling of resin/fiberglass laminates at fiber stresses ranging from 13,000 to 70,000 psi does not significantly alter the physical properties of the laminate. At high fiber stress levels, laminates developed cracks parallel to the surface filaments. These cracks were observed after 10,000 cycles at fiber stresses in excess of 50,000 psi. (Author)

A larger diameter (.040 inch) spinneret, discounting presumably some of the melt fracture limitations experienced with the smaller diameter spinnerets, permitted higher thermal jacket temperatures to be used and as a result the higher spinning speeds. The evaluation of the low thermal hazard extrusion head remains incomplete and the desired increase in I. V. was not obtained. (Author)

Improved methods for introducing phenoxy blocking groups into the trimer were developed. Additional work was done on the amino derivatives. Copolymerization of phosphonitriles of reduced functionality with hydroquinone was studied, and the introduction of the isocyanate function into the trimer was accomplished. (Author)

A polymer from P3N3(Oc6H5)3.5(OC2H5) 1.25C11.25 was prepared and submitted to the New York Naval Shipyard for evaluation. Work was done on phenyl, phenoxy, and dimethylamino blocked monomers, and on the copolymerization of phosphonitriles with hydroquinone. This information is provided for reference purposes only.This project was undertaken to develop new thermoplastic and thermosetting resins from phosphonitrilic chloride trimer for high temperature electrical applications. Derivatives of phosphonitrilic chloride trimer containing phenoxy, ethoxy, and chloro groups in various proportions have been found to polymerize to hard, clear resins by the elimination of ethyl chloride and the formation of P-O-P linkages. Further work on monomers for this polymerization is also described. (Author)

Cumene oxidation indicates antimony oxide and chlorinated paraffins protect materials by altering the path of oxidation.
