Authors:  O. C. Trulson; H. W. Goldstein; UNION CARBIDE RESEARCH INST TARRYTOWN NY
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only.A mass spectrometer was used with a high temperature Knudsen effusion source to obtain vapor pressure data for zirconium diboride in the temperature range 2267 to 2445 K. The heat of vaporization at 298 K determined from a Third Law analysis of the data is 454.5 = 5.3 kcal/mole. Vapor pressure data fr zirconium and boron were also obtained. The Third-Law heats of vaporization are 141.8 = 3.3 kcal/ mole ...

The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only. The photon transport program using the Monte Carlo technique was developed to study the time-dependent transport of radiation through an arbitrary geometrical configuration constructed of a variety of materials. It has special features for calculating energy deposition as a function of time in surfaces exposed to radiation and for calculating energy deposition, photon flux, electron flux or tissue equivalent detector responses at selected field points. The program can consider photon ...

PRINCIPLES GOVERNING THE BEHAVIOR OF SOLID MATERIALS IN SEVERE HIGH TEMPERATURE ENVIRONMENTS. 31 DEC 1965
Authors:  Patrick N. Walsh; UNION CARBIDE RESEARCH INST TARRYTOWN NY
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only. This program is concerned with the principles governing high-temperature chemical and physical behavior of refractory materials especially in the respects that may contribute importantly to the successful performance of these materials as rocket nozzle components operating at high temperatures. In this program emphasis is being placed on chemical corrosion since understanding of it and its effect on operational performance are of great importance in making effective use of available materials. ...

PRINCIPLES GOVERNING THE BEHAVIOR OF SOLID MATERIALS IN SEVERE HIGH TEMPERATURE ENVIRONMENTS 30 JUN 1965 67 pages
Authors:  S. R. Aspinall; UNION CARBIDE RESEARCH INST TARRYTOWN NY
The full text of this report is available for sale. The reaction between high-density tungsten and H2O vapor has been studied from 1900 to 2800 K in the induction-heated stagnation-flow reactor at H2O partial pressures from 25 to 155 torr. The reaction is linear with time at all pressures and temperatures studied. All isobars show apparent activation energies that decrease with temperature, indicating that gas-phase diffusion limits the reaction rates at the higher temperature. Furthermore, the rates are dependent on ...

THE DETERMINATION OF BORON IN REFRACTORY BORIDES BY PYROHYDROLYSIS. JAN 1965
Authors:  G. J. McKinley; H. F. Wendt; UNION CARBIDE RESEARCH INST TARRYTOWN NY
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only.An analytical method has been developed for the determination of boron in the refractory borides of titanium, zirconium, niobium and tantalum. Pyrohydrolysis of the refractory boride forms boric acid which is distilled, collected, and titrated by a mannitol-sodium hydroxide procedure. The method is precise and accurate, and its simplicity of operation makes it attractive for use as a routine procedure. (Author)

RESEARCH ON PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PRINCIPLES AFFECTING HIGH TEMPERATURE MATERIALS FOR ROCKET NOZZLES 31 DEC 1964 66 pages
Authors:  S. R. Aspinall; Verner Schomaker; UNION CARBIDE RESEARCH INST TARRYTOWN NY
The full text of this report is available for sale.

STAGNATION-POINT-VELOCITY DISTRIBUTION FOR A COMPRESSIBLE FLUID, OCT 1964
Authors:  R. A. Graff; UNION CARBIDE RESEARCH INST TARRYTOWN NY
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only. The Rayleigh-Janzen method is applied to the potential flow of a compressible fluid impinging on a flat plate at right angles. An analytical expression for the velocity distribution is obtained up to the second perturbation. (Author)

MASS SPECTROMETRIC STUDY OF THE OXIDATION OF TUNGSTEN, OCT 1964
Authors:  P. O. Schissel; O. C. Trulson; UNION CARBIDE RESEARCH INST TARRYTOWN NY
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only.A mass spectrometer was used to study the kinetics of the oxygen-tungsten reaction over the temperature range 1400 to 3150 K at oxygen pressures as high as 0.0002 torr. The main products of chemical reaction are identified as W3O9, W2O6, WO3, and WO2; their intensities are given as a function of surface temperature and oxygen pressure. At high surface temperatures, atomic oxygen is observed in an abundance comparable to the ...

RESEARCH ON PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PRINCIPLES AFFECTING HIGH TEMPERATURE MATERIALS FOR ROCKET NOZZZLES. 30 SEP 1964 90 pages
Authors:  Robert Lowrie; UNION CARBIDE RESEARCH INST TARRYTOWN NY
The full text of this report is available for sale.Data were obtained on the corrosion of W by CO2/Ar mixtures with CO2 stagnation partial pressures of 40, 81, 122, 192, and 340 torr at 2325-3000 K and 340-torr total stagnation pressure. The reaction rate is linear with time. At the lower temperatures log rate is nearly linear with reciprocal temperature for all CO2 partial pressures, and near 3000 K the rates approach those calculated for diffusion control. These data ...

FLUORINE OXIDIZERS. 01 SEP 1964 22 pages
Authors:  R. H. Toeniskoetter; F. P. Gortsema; UNION CARBIDE RESEARCH INST TARRYTOWN NY
The full text of this report is available for sale.ClO2F reacted with cesium fluoride at 0-25 degrees to produce a solid having a limiting composition near 'CsF2'. The solid however, possesses little oxidizing strength. Reaction of ClO2F with cesium oxide gave a solid product containing Cs, F and Cl in variable composition. These experiments gave no evidence indicating the formation of a stable fluorochlorate salt. ClO2F and ClF3 reacted with CsN3 with formation of F-containing solids. These reactions are ...

RESEARCH ON PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PRINCIPLES AFFECTING HIGH TEMPERATURE MATERIALS FOR ROCKET NOZZLES 31 MAR 1962 58 pages
Authors:  Robert Lowrie; UNION CARBIDE RESEARCH INST TARRYTOWN NY
The full text of this report is available for sale.Reactions of several new materials (HfB2, HfC and solid solutions of TiC/ZrC and ZrC/Nb with possible rocket exhaust components) were studied. Only HfC is oxidizing atmospheres appeared to have attractive qualities. Preliminary kinetic studies were conducted with TiC and ZTA graphite in mixtures of CO2-CO-Ar. Corrosion of both materials depended linearly upon the CO2 partial pressure; the graphite corroded nearly linearly with time. New phases were observed in corroded carbide ...
