Subsurface Wave-Measuring Systems, NOV 1982
Authors:  George Z. Forristall; SHELL DEVELOPMENT CO HOUSTON TEX
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only.Pressure transducers were one of the first means used to measure waves in coastal waters. Nevertheless, some stigma has been attached to their use, since the wave signal is attenuated by overlying water. In some investigations, the correction for this attenuation has not been done, or has been done improperly. Contemporary high-resolution instruments and digital data processing techniques can now be used to get accurate wave data in many situations. ...

885 F Embrittlement in 12Cr Steel Distillation Column Tray APR 80
Authors:  E. L. Creamer; SHELL DEVELOPMENT CO HOUSTON TEX
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only.A crude distillation column tray, fabricated supposedly from Type 410 stainless steel, failed in an extremely brittle manner after exposure to conditions which could induce 474 C embrittlement. An investigation confirmed that the tray had experienced 474 C embrittlement. Although the material met, according to analysis, Type 410 stainless steel composition requirements, it also contained a significant concentration of titanium, raising the suspicion that the alloy was Type 409 stainless ...

Theory of Microwave Dielectric Constant Logging Using the Electromagnetic Wave Propagation Method MAY 1979
Authors:  R. Freedman; John P. Vogiatzis; SHELL DEVELOPMENT CO HOUSTON TEX
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only. The composite dielectric constants of earth formations at microwave frequencies are strongly dependent on formation water saturations and relatively independent of water salinities. Therefore, microwave frequency dielectric constant logging offers an attractive new electromagnetic (EM) method of formation evaluation. A device which utilizes this method of well logging has been proposed By Calvert and Rau in two recent U. S. patents. We discuss the basic physics underlying the operation of ...

The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only.Analyses to obtain theoretical time-settlement curves for embankments typically make use of soil properties measured in the laboratory on small disturbed samples subject to strain rates and hydraulic gradients that are several orders of magnitude greater than those encountered in the field. Only anlayses of well-documented case histories can demonstrate the validity of such extrapolations. Refined analyses based on detailed field observations of settlements and pore water pressures at various ...

Development of a New Wringer for the Zero-Relative-Velocity Belt Skimmer. NOV 1977
Authors:  J. M. Ward; SHELL DEVELOPMENT CO HOUSTON TEX
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only.A simpler, lighter, and less expensive wringer mechanism has been developed for the ZRV Skimmer, a sorbent belt oil spill recovery vessel for use in fast currents. The new design, consisting of a large perforated drum and smaller peripheral rollers, is recommended to replace the original opposed conveyor design in the prototype skimmer. Performance tests comparing full-scale (but unit width) mock-ups of the new and original wringers showed that the ...

Continental Shelf Currents in Tropical Storm Delia: Observations and Theory JUL 1977
Authors:  George Z. Forristall; Robert C. Hamilton; Vincent J. Cardone; SHELL DEVELOPMENT CO HOUSTON TEX
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only.Storm currents are a significant part of the design hydrodynamic flow field in areas subject to tropical storms. In September 1973, tropical storm Delia passed over the instrumented Buccaneer platform located in 20 m of water 50 km south of Galveston, Tex. Current meter records from three depths show the storm produced currents on the order of 2 m s which persisted to near the bottom. A mathematical model of ...

A Zero-Relative-Velocity Belt Skimmer, Stage II - Confirming Tests and Prototype Design. MAY 1977
Authors:  R. R. Ayers; J. M. Ward; SHELL DEVELOPMENT CO HOUSTON TEX
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only.A 40-foot-long prototype skimming vessel has been designed which uses twin floating sorbent belts to recover spilled oil in 6-8 knot currents. Oil recovery rates up to 600 gpm are possible with the prototype because the composite belts are propelled at the same speed as the water (relative to the vessel). The performance of this zero-relative-velocity (ZRV) belt arrangement was tow-tested at full scale in calm water and in waves. ...

Volumetric Subsidence-Compaction Ratios for a Horizontally Stratified Elastic Half-Space SEP 1974
Authors:  A. S. Williamson; SHELL DEVELOPMENT CO HOUSTON TEX
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only.Volumetric subsidence-compaction ratios have been established earlier for the homogeneous half-space by Geertsma and for the half-space with a rigid stratum below a compacting reservoir by Van Opstal. In the present paper additional results are presented for the same ratio for an elastic half-space, consisting of an arbitrary number of different isotropic, homogeneous strata, resting on a basement, which itself is an elastic homogeneous continuum. Compaction may occur in any ...

The effects of melt processing variables on the morphology and properties of injection molded polypropylene. OCT 73
Authors:  M. R. Kantz; SHELL DEVELOPMENT CO HOUSTON TEX
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only.Controlled variations in melt temperature and injection pressure during the injection molding of isotactic polypropylene tensile bars are correlated with differences in the skin-core morphology and preferred orientation as observed using optical microscopy and x-ray diffraction. The molding anisotropy is, in turn, related to systematic variations in tensile yield strength, notched Izod impact strength, and longitu-dinal shrinkage. The correlation between processing variables and morphology is used to construct a qualitative ...

a function of hydroxyl position in linear alcohols. MAY 70
Authors:  J. W. Hayden; SHELL DEVELOPMENT CO HOUSTON TEX
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only.Esters of linear secondary alcohols are inferior plasticizers when comparedwith esters of linear primary alcohols of the same carbon number. Plasticizer performance becomes poorer as the hydroxyl group shifts towardthe center of the alcohol molecule. There is some evidence to suggest thatsecondary alcohols tend to dehydrate more rapidly than primary alcoholsduring acid catalyzed esterification. Volatility measurements indicatethat there is no significant difference in the stability of the esters attemperatures representative ...
