Basis of Ionospheric Modification by High-Frequency Waves JUN 2007 21 pages
Authors:  S. P. Kuo; POLYTECHNIC UNIV BROOKLYN NY DEPT OF ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING AND COMPUTER SCIENCE
The full text of this report is available for sale. The requirements of achieving ionospheric modification by ground-transmitted HF heating waves are discussed. The directly relevant processes including linear mode conversion and parametric instabilities are explained physically. The nonline & Schrodinger equation for Langmuir waves is reviewed and the initial conditions of two types of nonlinear solutions are discussed; from which the criterion for Langmuir soliton generation is pointed out.

Enhancement of Stochastic Resonance by Tuning System Parameters and Adding Noise Simultaneously NOV 2005 8 pages
Authors:  Xingxing Wu; Zhong-Ping Jiang; Daniel Repperger; POLYTECHNIC UNIV BROOKLYN NY DEPT OF ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING AND COMPUTER SCIENCE
The full text of this report is available for sale. The stochastic resonance effect can be realized by tuning system parameters or by adding noise. This paper investigates the possibility to enhance the stochastic resonance effect by tuning system parameters and adding noise simultaneously. First, we use some examples to demonstrate the situation where only the system parameters or noise can be adjusted for maximizing the stochastic resonance effect. Then, it is shown using standard optimization theory that the normalized ...

Generation Characterization and Aerospace Applications of Torch Plasmas MAY 2004 21 pages
Authors:  Spencer P. Kuo; POLYTECHNIC UNIV BROOKLYN NY DEPT OF ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING AND COMPUTER SCIENCE
The full text of this report is available for sale. This basic research effort addressed the physical issues related to the generation of atmospheric pressure plasmas and to the use of "Torch Plasmas" for aerospace applications. The most significant accomplishment has been the development of a plasma torch into an ignition aide for use in scramjet engines. It was shown that such a torch can deliver sufficient heat to cold, liquid JP-7 fuel injected into a Mach-2 crossflow (having a ...

Operational Characteristics of a Periodic Plasma Torch 08 DEC 2003 8 pages
Authors:  Spencer Kuo; David Bivolaru; Campbell D. Carter; Lance Jacobsen; Skip Williams; POLYTECHNIC UNIV BROOKLYN NY DEPT OF ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING AND COMPUTER SCIENCE
The full text of this report is available for sale. There is considerable interest in the development of plasma sources having open structures. Such plasma sources have applications in a variety of areas including, spray coating and materials synthesis 1, 2, microwave reflection/absorption 3-S, sterilization and chemical neutralization 6, 7, shock-wave mitigation for sonic boom and wave-drag reductions in supersonic flights 8-1O, and ignition in supersonic combustors 1 LPL3J. Different applications have different requirements on the plasma parameters, such as ...
