Distributed Mechanical Actuators for Design of a Closed-Loop Flow-Control System (Postprint) OCT 2006 19 pages
Authors:  Mehul P. Patel; Richard M. Kolacinski; S. K. Patil; T. T. Ng; ORBITAL RESEARCH INC CLEVELAND OH
The full text of this report is available for sale. This report was developed under a SBIR contract. Active flow control experiments were conducted on a two-dimensional, single-element NACA 4312 airfoil to assess the performance of vortex generators and gurney flaps as lift-enhancing devices for the control of longitudinal dynamics of an air vehicle. The vortex-generators are shown to delay boundary layer separation and provide an increase in the lift coefficient for angles of attack above 12 deg, and the ...

On the Use of Miniature Actuator Bumps (MABs) for Nozzle Thrust Vectoring 31 OCT 2005 16 pages
Authors:  Mehul P. Patel; Russ Stucke; T. T. Ng; Alan B. Cain; ORBITAL RESEARCH INC CLEVELAND OH
The full text of this report is available for sale.Experimental and Computational studies are conducted to investigate the use of miniature actuator bumps (MABs) for nozzle jet vectoring. The control concept features asymmetric deployment of MABs around the nozzle throat to subsonically skew the sonic plane and shift the throat for jet vectoring. Cold-flow jet studies are conducted to investigate the effects of actuator parameters (deployment height, location, and shape) on pitch vector control for axisymmetric and non-axisymmetric nozzles. ...

Reactive Flow Control System Using Intelligent Control Modules for Virtual Aerodynamic Shaping DEC 2002
Authors:  Mehul P. Patel; Troy S. Prince; Richard M. Kolacinski; T. T. Ng; Alan B. Cain; ORBITAL RESEARCH INC CLEVELAND OH
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only.A proof-of-concept closed-loop reactive flow control methodology using discrete intelligent control modules for virtual aerodynamic shaping of air vehicles is developed. Discrete suction control technique integrated with dynamic pressure sensors and a closed- loop controller forms the basis of the intelligent control modules, which are then coordinated by a higher-level controller to enable a desired flow effect on the surface of the air vehicle. Static and dynamic wind tunnel tests ...

Multi-Agent Algorithms for Chemical Cloud Detection and Mapping Using Unmanned Air Vehicles SEP 2002
Authors:  Michael A. Kovacina; Daniel Palmer; Guang Yang; Ravi Vaidyanathan; ORBITAL RESEARCH INC CLEVELAND OH
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only.Traditional control approaches fall well short of the necessary flexibility and efficiency needed to meet the commercial and military demands placed upon UAV swarms. Effective coordination of these swarms requires development of control strategies based on emergent behavior. We have developed a rule-based, decentralized control algorithm that relies on constrained randomized behavior and respects UAV restrictions on sensors, computation, and flight envelope.

MEMS Actuated Deployable Flow Effectors System for Missile Control. AIAA Missile Sciences Conference Held in Monterey, CA on 7-9 November 2000 SEP 2000 12 pages
Authors:  Mehul P. Patel; T. T. Ng; Frederick J. Lisy; Troy S. Prince; Jack M. DiCocco; ORBITAL RESEARCH INC CLEVELAND OH
The full text of this report is available for sale. This paper presents an innovative active flow control strategy to enhance missile launch capability and increase maneuverability of missiles at high Angle of Attack ALPHA thereby allowing rear hemisphere engagement maneuvers. This flow control technique utilizes Deployable Flow Effectors DFE's, which can be actuated using miniature pneumatic valves or micropumps that are fabricated using MicroElectroMechanical Systems MEMS technology. Low power pressure sensors are integrated with the DFE's in a common ...

Evolutionary Path Planning for Autonomous Air Vehicles Using Multiresolution Path Representation 2000 13 pages
Authors:  Ravi Vaidyanathan; Cem Hocaoglu; Troy S. Prince; Roger D. Quinn; ORBITAL RESEARCH INC CLEVELAND OH
The full text of this report is available for sale. There is a recognized need for automated path planning for unmanned air vehicles (UAVs) and guided munitions. Evolutionary programming approaches provide an alternative to classical functional optimization methods with the capability of incorporating a variety of optimization goals, while tolerating vehicle constraints. In this work, we introduce an evolutionary flight path planning algorithm capable of mapping paths for free-flying vehicles functioning under several aerodynamic constraints. An air-to-ground targeting scenario was ...
