An investigation of the carbonyl compounds formed from the ignition of cellulose nitrate was made. Isolated as the 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine derivatives were acetone, acetaldehyde, formaldehyde, methylglyoxal, glyoxal, mesoxaldehyde and hydroxypyruvaldehyde. A gas chromatographic study of the cellulose nitrate (cast from ethyl acetate) ignition products demonstrated the presence therein of acetaldehyde, acetone, acrolein, ethyl acetate, hydrogen cyanide and a now, unidentified substance which is not a carbonyl compound. Ethanol is not a ...

|
The report undertakes to analyze the nature of skilled performance and to develop a theoretical basis for the understanding of man's performance capacities. The first section of the report develops a framework for the experimental study of skilled performance. It deals with the taxonomy of tasks, with the measurement of human performance, and with several mathematical and physical models that are useful in guiding research and in theoretical organization of ...

The document is concerned with an analysis of the nature of skilled performance and the relationship of various physical or measurable aspects of tasks to human performance. It is especially concerned with factors that limit performance. The analysis of performance limits logically begins with the types of tasks where fundamental biological factors are the primary determinants of behavior capacity. (Author)

A supplement to the report, Orthographic Representation of the English Pronunciation as an Aid in Teaching ILA, is presented (PB-150 248). To the nine languages included in the original report, the present list adds a Greek orthographic spelling of air traffic control words and phrases. This list has not as yet been subjected to the experimental evaluation performed on behalf of the original nine orthographic spellings. (Author)

Procedures, equipment, and environmental factors involved in obtaining 96 recorded acoustic samples of men walking, representative of four distances, six terrains, and four numbers of participants are described. Spectral analyses and analyses of the sound-pressure levels of the recordings were made. The terrains fell into three distinct groupings in terms of over-all level. The four distances (and sizes of parties) were orderly if viewed as three distances (and sizes), the ...

An evaluation was made of the method of measuring speaker intelligibility by listener ratings of voice samples on an equal-appearing intervals scale. Twenty-four speakers and seven panels of listeners, with a minimum of 20 persons in each panel, were involved in the experiment. Recordings were made of each speaker reading multiple-choice intelligibility test word lists and prose material. Ten-second voice samples were prepared from the prose reading. The multiple-choice test ...

A simple technique, employing echo-area measuring equipment, has been developed to measure the absolute values of the scattering aperture and absorption (effective) aperture of an antenna with a short-circuited feed. The technique has been applied to an optimum pyramidal horn and the results are correlated with theoretical considerations found in the literature.

Forty-eight speakers received the messages they were to impart to listeners in a face-to-face situation. For 24 of them the aural channel was delayed 0.23 second from that of the visual. The experimental design yielded criterion scores applicable to the reduction by an analysis of variance. The effect of dissynchrony of the aural-visual signals upon the speakers was not to change the intelligibility of speech or the sound pressure level ...

This report deals with various performance parameters associated with miniature engines. Performances under low temperature and low pressure ambients are discussed. Design considerations and suitabilities dealing with starting, cooling, carburetion, and control systems are presented. Results of exploratory tests on noise control, as well as recent engine experience on two new test engines, concludes this period report on the project.
