The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only.Historically there are two principal methods of matrix structural analysis, the displacement (or stiffness) the force method has been used relatively little because the displacement method has been deemed easier to implement on digital computers, especially for large sparse systems. The force method has theoretical advantages, however, for multiple redesign problems or nonlinear elastic analysis because it allows the solution of modified problems without restarting the computation from the beginning. ...

Authors:  Robert E. Johnston; NORTH CAROLINA STATE UNIV RALEIGH
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only.Adaptation of virulent viruses to an alternate host, either animal or tissue culture, has long been recognized as a means of attenuating virulence for the natural host. The molecular mechanism(s) involved in attenuation by blind passage in tissue culture is not understood. One explanation for this phenomenon is that virus replication involves many specific interactions between virus- derived and host-derived products. Selection in a particular host cell for virus mutants ...

Effect of Particle Surface Roughness on Mechanical Impedance of Coarse-Textured Soil Materials NOV 1981
Authors:  R. M. Cruse; D. K. Cassel; R. E. Stitt; F. G. Averette; NORTH CAROLINA STATE UNIV RALEIGH
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only.Packing energy required to increase bulk density in coarse-textured soils is influenced by particle surface roughness, i.e., by interparticle friction. It was, therefore, hypothesized that particle surface roughness would influence soil resistance to movement of a cone penetrometer, because soil bulk density is increased in the zone surrounding the penetrometer measurements, and C.I. was compared in both disturbed and undisturbed coarse-textured soil material, with each soil having a unique particle ...

Effects of Soil Sample Size and Included Root and Wood on Bulk Density in Forested Soils JAN 1981

The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only.Obtaining reliable estimates of bulk density of forested soils can be an arduous task. The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only.Soils on the Atlantic Coastal Plain compact to different bulk densities under the same compactive effort. It is hypothesized that densification differences observed among Ap horizon materials of these soils are partially due to variations in soil particle surface roughness. Surface ruoghness of Coastal Plain soil materials and sand size fractions derived from these materials were photographed and/or characterized by measuring the dense soil angle of response (DSAR) over a ...

Drain Depth and Subirrigation in Layered Soils JUN 1980
Authors:  Yau K. Tang; R. Wayne Skaggs; NORTH CAROLINA STATE UNIV RALEIGH
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only. The Richards equation for two-dimensional saturated-unsaturated water movement was solved for subirrigation from buried drains in layered soils. Numerical solutions were obtained for soils that have subsurface layers with high hydraulic conductivities. Results showed that increasing the drain depth so that it approaches or penetrates a high conductivity bottom layer will reduce head loss due to convergence near the drain. Deeper drains significantly increased subirrigation rates for deep soils and ...

Authors:  Antonis D. Koussis; Siu-Lun Chow; NORTH CAROLINA STATE UNIV RALEIGH
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale.
