THz+X Seedling Report 23 NOV 2005 36 pages
Authors:  Robert Shelton; Frank DeLucia; Doug Petkie; NOMADICS INC STILLWATER OK
The full text of this report is available for sale. This report describes efforts undertaken on a seedling project administered through the Army Research Office. The purpose of the seedling was to identify additive techniques or technologies for THz sensing applications, THz+X. The primary application space of interest was standoff sensing of explosives, followed by chemical and biological agents. Two techniques were identified which might prove useful as additive technologies for THz-based sensing. Each is intended to overcome the pressure ...

Novel Technology for Wide-Area Screening of ERC-Contaminated Soils 22 JUL 2005 18 pages
Authors:  Mark Fisher; NOMADICS INC STILLWATER OK
The full text of this report is available for sale.Long-term use of high explosives (HE) on DoD training ranges and other defense installations has in some cases resulted in contamination of soil and groundwater with residues of HE and explosive-related compounds (ERCs). The vast majority of the millions of acres of DoD lands are likely free of contamination, or are contaminated at levels that cause little concern. Nevertheless, virtually all lands on all defense sites have become subject to ...

Field Collection and Analysis of Forensic and Biometric Evidence Associated with IEDs 02 MAY 2005 24 pages
Authors:  Mark Prather; NOMADICS INC STILLWATER OK
The full text of this report is available for sale. This report summarizes the results for contract N00014-05-M-0010. In summary, the objectives of this work were: * Define sample collection scenarios that are suited for the screening of personnel who are likely to be involved in the production of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) or who may be suicide bombers, to include at least one swab approach and one vapor sampling of hands or clothing. * Optimize the Fido technology to ...

Autonomous Underwater X-Ray 19 JAN 2005 8 pages
Authors:  Matthew Dock; NOMADICS INC STILLWATER OK
The full text of this report is available for sale.In this SBIR Phase I Nomadics documented the penetration and backscatter of an underwater X-ray system. The system consists of an X-ray source water tank and a gamma ray detector capable of sensing the high-energy scattered X-rays. Using the results of these tests the model of X-ray penetration and backscatter can be verified and used to extrapolate expected performance of the final system.

Explosive Chemical Signature-Based Detection of IEDs 31 DEC 2004 22 pages
Authors:  Mark Fisher; NOMADICS INC STILLWATER OK
The full text of this report is available for sale. The objectives of this contract were as follows: To further characterize and understand the explosive chemical signature of improvised explosive devices (IEDs); Develop and adapt high-volume sampling methods for use against IEDs and for incorporation into a robotic platform; Modify and adapt the Fido sensor device to operation on a small robot; Integrate the Fido and high- volume sampling functions into a small footprint commensurate with operation of a small ...

Detection of Landmines and Suspected Minefields Using Novel Amplifying Fluorescent Polymers DEC 2002 23 pages
Authors:  Marcus LA Grone; Mark Fisher; Colin Cumming; Eric Towers; NOMADICS INC STILLWATER OK
The full text of this report is available for sale. This report describes continuing efforts to detect landmines by using novel fluorescent polymers that sense the ultra-trace concentrations of nitroaromatic compounds emanating from explosives contained in mines. Under this contract, scientific studies were made and several new generations of detectors were developed and tested in an effort to understand the chemical signature of landmines. It has been shown that the landmine chemical signature tends to be heterogeneous and can be ...
