| Authors:
R. W. Munn; NATIONAL RESEARCH COUNCIL OF CANADA OTTAWA (ONTARIO) DIV OF PURE CHEMISTRY
|
 | The negative coefficient of thermal expansion parallel to the tetragonal axis of indium at room temperature is interpreted in terms of the elastic properties of the lattice. A suggestion that the negative thermal expansion implies a negative linear compressibility in the same direction is refuted. (Author) |

 | Previous work by many authors has led to the assumption that retamine might be (+)-12-hydroxysparteine. A partial synthesis of the enantiomorph of this compound was effected by dehydration of (+)-13-hydroxylupanine and hydroboration of the product. The dehydration product consisted of two components that were separated by thin-layer chromatography and identified by the characteristics of their nuclear magnetic resonance (n.m.r.) spectra as delta 12,13- and delta 13,14-dehydrolupanine. Hydroboration of the delta ... |

 | It is shown how thermodynamic data (heat capacity, thermal expansion, etc.) may be used to estimate accurately certain scattering properties of crystals, assuming the validity of the quasi-harmonic approximation of lattice dynamics. In particular, DebyeWaller factors and incoherent neutron scattering cross sections can be readily correlated with thermodynamic data even though the form of the lattice frequency distribution of the crystal is not known. This correlation rigorously establishes the structure of indaconitine and its absolute configuration. The product of the saponification of indaconitine, pseudaconitine, pseudaconine, is identical with the product of the saponification of pseudaconitine, and this last alkaloid has been correlated previously with aconitine. | A study of the photolysis of azoxymethane was made. The reaction products include nitrogen, nitrous oxide, methane, and ethane. The ratio N2:N2O is independent of temperature and two primary photolytic processes are postulated to account for this fact. On the assumption that methane arises from the reaction CH3 + CH3N2OCH3 yields CH4 + CH2N2OCH3, the activation energy of this reaction is 6=2kcal/mole. | A study of the mercury-photosensitized decomposition of ammonia, both with pure ammonia and with propane added as a scavenger for hydrogen atoms, suggests that the quantum yield of the primary decomposition into H and NH2 is much less than unity at 33 C and rises with increasing temperature.
