Authors:  Brent C Ruby; Dustin Slivka; John Cuddy; Walter Hailes; MONTANA UNIV MISSOULA
The full text of this report is available for sale. The goal of this effort was to improve training and sustainment programs for the Air Force Special Operations Command. Interventions are sought to enhance physical strength, endurance, fatigue resistance, and mental resilience. Over the course of this funding cycle, the effects of nutrition on human performance have been studied under various environmental conditions in the laboratory and austere environments. Similarly, the practical usefulness of biomarker detection during field environments has ...

Elucidation of Prion Protein Conformational Changes Associated with Infectivity by Fluorescence Spectroscopy JUN 2006 31 pages
Authors:  Michele McGuirl; MONTANA UNIV MISSOULA
The full text of this report is available for sale.Prion diseases are fatal neurodegenerative diseases of mammals. They are characterized by the conversion of normal prion protein (PrP) to a misfolded conformational state that accumulates as plaques in the brain. The diagnosis of prion diseases relies on the ability to differentiate between normal PrP and its misfolded, infectious form. This is difficult to accomplish by traditional testing methods, since it requires discerning between conformational states of a protein that ...

New and Improved Methods for Monitoring Air Quality and the Terrestrial Environment MAY 2001 211 pages
Authors:  Jerry J. Bromenshenk; MONTANA UNIV MISSOULA
The full text of this report is available for sale.Honey bees (Apis mellifera L.) are multi-media monitors of chemical exposures and biotic effects. This six-year project has developed an automated system to assess in real-time colony behavioral responses to stressors, both anthropogenic and natural, including inclement weather. It also addressed chemical exposures by measuring the concentrations of volatile and semi-Volatile organic chemicals in ambient air and the air inside beehives, persistent pesticides and PCBs in bees and pollen, and ...

New and Improved Methods for Monitoring Air Quality and the Terrestrial MAY 2000 169 pages
Authors:  Jerry Bromenshenk; MONTANA UNIV MISSOULA
The full text of this report is available for sale.Honey bees (Apis mellifera L.) are multi-media monitors of chemical exposures and biotic effects. This six-year project has developed an automated system to assess in real time colony behavioral responses to stressors, both anthropogenic and natural, including inclement weather. 1999 field trials at the Aberdeen Proving Ground- Edgewood area included the J-Field landfill, Cluster 3, Boundary Areas, and a Churchville, MD reference site. J-Field posed the highest risk of exposure ...

Training and Extended Operations in Females OCT 1999 60 pages
Authors:  Brent C. Ruby; MONTANA UNIV MISSOULA
The full text of this report is available for sale. The purpose of this extension project was to complete three studies with male and female subjects during short term and seasonal exposure to an arduous work environment and to determine the effects of an uncontrolled situation (active wildland firefighters engaged in wildfire suppression) and gender on measures of total energy expenditure (TEE), energy balance, total body water and body composition. Although prior research has been performed using simulated field operations ...

Training and Extended Operation in Females: Effects on Reproductive Hormones, Bone Health, Task Specific Performance, and Comparative Energy Utilization OCT 1999
Authors:  Brent C. Ruby; MONTANA UNIV MISSOULA
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only. The purpose of this project was to complete a series of investigations to provide a comprehensive study of the female in an arduous work environment and to determine the effects of an uncontrolled field situation (active Wildland firefighters engaged in wildfire suppression) and gender on total energy expenditure (doubly labeled water), energy balance, body composition, bone metabolism, and menstrual function. Two secondary purposes of ...

New and Improved Methods for Monitoring Air Quality and the Terrestrial Environment JUN 1999 108 pages
Authors:  Jerry J. Bromenshenk; Garon C. Smith; MONTANA UNIV MISSOULA
The full text of this report is available for sale.Honey bees (Apis mellifera L.) are multi-media monitors of chemical exposures and biotic effects. This five-year project has developed an automated system to assess in real-time colony behavioral responses to stressors, both anthropogenic and natural, including inclement weather. 1998 field trials at the Aberdeen Proving Ground-Edgewood area included the Old O Field and J Field landfills, D Field and Boundary Areas, and a Churchville, MD reference ...

New and Improved Methods for Monitoring Air Quality and the Terrestrial Environment: Applications at Aberdeen Proving Ground-Edgewood Area MAR 1998 150 pages
Authors:  Jerry J. Bromenshenk; Garon C. Smith; MONTANA UNIV MISSOULA
The full text of this report is available for sale.Honey bees (Apis mellifera L.) have been shown to be multi-media monitors of chemical exposures and resultant effects. This five-year project has developed an automated system to assess in real-time colony behavioral responses to stressors, both anthropogenic and natural, including inclement weather. Field trials at the Aberdeen Proving Ground-Edgewood included the Old O Field and J field landfills, the Canal Creek and Bush River areas, and a Churchville, MD reference ...

Training and Extended Operation in Females: Effects on Reproductive Hormones, Bone Health, Task Specific Performance, and Comparative Energy Utilization OCT 1997 71 pages
Authors:  Brent C. Ruby; MONTANA UNIV MISSOULA
The full text of this report is available for sale. The purpose of this project has been to determine the relationship between menstrual function, gender and total energy expenditure (TEE) on measures of bone health in males and females exposed to seasonal arduous work (extended operations). A secondary purpose of this project has been to determine the effect of gender and the menstrual cycle on substrate utilization (glucose metabolism) during exercise. Because the critical issues cannot be represented by a ...

New and Improved Methods for Monitoring Air Quality and the Terrestrial Environment NOV 96 194 pages
Authors:  Jerry J. Bromenshenk; Garon C. Smith; Bruce E. King; Robert A. Seccomb; Ghassan Alnasser; MONTANA UNIV MISSOULA
The full text of this report is available for sale.Honey bees (Apis mellifera L.) have been shown to be multi-media monitors of chemical exposures and biotic effects. However, most methods of measuring honey bee colony population dynamics have been time-intensive and subject to observer error. This four-year project has developed an automated system to assess continuously (in real-time) colony flight activity, temperature and relative humidity in the brood nest, total hive biomass, pollen collected, and a full spectrum of ...

A Comparison of Some Robust Procedures for Estimating a Linear Discriminant Function, 1992
Authors:  Hongzhe Li; MONTANA UNIV MISSOULA
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only.A number of methods have been suggested for robustly estimating a linear discriminant function. These include substitution of robust estimates for the mean and covariance matrix and methods which choose a projection to maximize a robust measure of separation. This paper presents results of Monte Carlo simulations comparing some of these methods along with various modifications to see whether relatively simple methods works as well as complicated ones.

Robustness of Regression M-Estimators Over Complex-valued Distributions, 1992
Authors:  Krishnendu Ghosh; Richard M. Heiberger; MONTANA UNIV MISSOULA
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only.Noisy complex-valued data, for which robust regression techniques are the natural analysis approach, arise in many physical fields. Evaluation of the efficiency of such techniques requires that their behavior be charted over a series of known reference distributions. We have defined several symmetric long-tailed complex distributions (e.g., complex slash, complex Cauchy, complex double exponential) based on complex normal distribution. We have compared via the maximin method the robustness of different ...
