Although Nb-Ti-Cr-Al alloys have attractive oxidation and oxygen embrittlement resistence, they have relatively low strengths; the use of composite technology to strengthen these alloys is investigated.
A suite of 29 binary, single-phase alloys that includes 18 different ordered intermetallic crystal structures has been tested. Microhardness and tendency toward formation of cracks are reported as a function of temperature; room-temperature Young's moduli are quoted; and results of simple room- temperature toughness tests are given.
