We show that photovoltaic fields generated internally in LiNbO3:Fe substrates are capable of efficiently reorienting liquid crystal molecules leading to new concepts of optically addressable light modulators. Using an arrangement consisting of a liquid crystal layer in contact with one or more LiNbO3:Fe photovoltaic substrates, we observe spatial filtering due to self-phase modulation in a planar oriented cell. The LiNbO3:Fe substrates are arranged such that light propagates along the +c ...

The research in this study develops an analysis technique for mechanized solid-state actuators. The methodology's strength stems from the fact that it can be applied to a single solid-state actuator or an actuator that is coupled to a compliant mechanism (mechanized). The technique couples the actuator to any compliant mechanism and it takes into account interactions between the mechanized actuator and its load. Thus the methodology can be applied to ...

Although innumerable different ionic liquids are possible, even basic physical-property data, such as the density and melting point, exist only for relatively few. Derivation of melting point QSPRs (Quantitative Structure- Property Relationships) for energetic ionic liquids would therefore greatly aid in the molecular design of new compounds. A new class of ionic liquids, based on 1-substituted-4-amino-1,2,4-triazolium bromide and nitrate salts, were recently synthesized and their melting points and densities measured. ...

The purpose of this contract was to provide the Materials and Manufacturing Directorate with the capability to acquire short-term research and development (R&D) and systems support efforts not readily available either in- house or under existing contracts. To facilitate the management of the program, all tasks were grouped into six categories: analyses, assessments, technical consultants, technology transition and transfer, strategic studies, and workshops.
