Digital Breast Imaging Warehouse for Research and Clinical Decision Support APR 2001 16 pages
Authors:  Hong Zhang; CALIFORNIA UNIV SAN FRANCISCO
The full text of this report is available for sale.Breast imaging is used intensively for breast cancer detection. As routine screening examination becomes more popular for women over 40, tremendous amount of breast imaging data has been accumulated. To diagnose breast abnormalities effectively, radiologists expect convenient access to well- organized breast imaging related information. Most breast cancer related data, however, spread across different systems, making them hard to access. For this project, the investigator will design and build an ...

A Novel Apoptosis Regulator JUN 2000 11 pages
Authors:  Hong Zhang; BURNHAM INST LA JOLLA CA
The full text of this report is available for sale.BAR is a multi-domain protein. A screen for cDNAs encoding suppressors of Bax induced cell death was performed in the yeast S. cerevisiae, resulting in a cDNA containing an open reading frame (ORF) encoding a novel human protein of 450 amino acids (-52 kDa), which we assigned the acronym BAR, for Bi-functional Apoptosis Regulator (Accession number bankit 283835). The predicted BAR protein contains several protein domains, including: (1) an N- ...

Dermal Absorption of Modular Artillery Charge (XM231) FEB 1998 16 pages
Authors:  James N. McDougal; Hong Zhang; Daniel L. Pollard; Gary W. Jepson; Kyung O. Yu; MANTECH-GEOCENTERS JOINT VENTURE DAYTON OH
The full text of this report is available for sale.Soldiers handling modular artillery propellant increments may have the potential to absorb chemical components through the skin of the hands. The purpose of this research was to determine if systemic absorption of chemical components of the new Modular Artillery Charge System (MACS) might be a hazard in operational military environments. The MACS includes a low zone XM23 1 increment and a high zone XM232 increment. For this study we sampled ...

Dermal Absorption of Modular Artillery Charge (XM232) JAN 1998 19 pages
Authors:  James N. McDougal; Hong Zhang; Daniel L. Pollard; Gary W. Jepson; Kyung O. Yu; MANTECH-GEOCENTERS JOINT VENTURE DAYTON OH
The full text of this report is available for sale.Soldiers handling Howitzer cartridges may have the potential to absorb the components of solid propellants through the skin of the hands. The purpose of this research was to determine if systemic absorption of chemical components of the new Modular Artillery Charge System (MACS) might be a hazard in operational military environments. We sampled the surfaces of solid propellant cartridges (XM232), which were stored under extreme environmental conditions, to determine the ...

A Bookkeeping Strategy for Multiple Objective Linear Programs JAN 97 15 pages
Authors:  Alok Aurovillian; Hong Zhang; Malgorzata M. Wiecek; INSTITUTE FOR COMPUTER APPLICATIONS IN SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING HAMPTON VA
The full text of this report is available for sale. This paper discusses the bookkeeping strategies for solving large multiple objective linear programs (MOLPs) on ADBASE, a well developed sequential software package, and on a parallel ADBASE algorithm. Three representative list creation schemes were first analyzed and tested. The best of them, Binary Search with Insertion Sort (BSIS), was selected to be incorporated into ADBASE and the parallel ADBASE algorithm. The resulting new bookkeeping strategy was then tested in ADBASE ...

Fourier-Laplace Analysis of Multigrid Waveform Relaxation Method for Hyperbolic Equations AUG 96 16 pages
Authors:  Shlomo Ta'asan; Hong Zhang; INSTITUTE FOR COMPUTER APPLICATIONS IN SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING HAMPTON VA
The full text of this report is available for sale. The multigrid waveform relaxation (WR) algorithm has been fairly studied and implemented for parabolic equations. It has been found that the performance of the multigrid WR method for a parabolic equation is practically the same as that of multigrid iteration for the associated steady state elliptic equation. However, the properties of the multigrid WR method for hyperbolic problems are relatively unknown. This paper studies the multigrid acceleration to the WR ...

A Scalable Parallel Algorithm for Multiple Objective Linear Programs JUN 94 15 pages
Authors:  Malgorzata M. Wiecek; Hong Zhang; INSTITUTE FOR COMPUTER APPLICATIONS IN SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING HAMPTON VA
The full text of this report is available for sale. This paper presents an ADBASE-based parallel algorithms for solving multiple objective linear programs (MOLPs). Job balance, speedup and scalability are of primary interest in evaluating efficiency of the new algorithm. Implementation results on Intel iPSC/2 and Paragon multiprocessors show that the algorithm significantly speeds up the process of solving MOLPs, which is understood as generating all or some efficient extreme points and unbounded efficient edges. The algorithm gives specially good ...

A Note on Windowing for the Waveform Relaxation APR 94 14 pages
Authors:  Hong Zhang; INSTITUTE FOR COMPUTER APPLICATIONS IN SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING HAMPTON VA
The full text of this report is available for sale. The technique of windowing has been often used in the implementation of the waveform relaxations for solving ODEs or time dependent PDEs. Its efficiency depends upon problem stiffness and operator splitting. Using model problems, the estimates for window length and convergence rate are derived. The effectiveness of windowing is then investigated for non-stiff and stiff cases respectively. It concludes that for the former, windowing is highly recommended when a large ...

Using Parallel Banded Linear System Solvers in Generalized Eigenvalue Problems SEP 93 20 pages
Authors:  Hong Zhang; William F. Moss; INSTITUTE FOR COMPUTER APPLICATIONS IN SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING HAMPTON VA
The full text of this report is available for sale.Subspace iteration is a reliable and cost effective method for solving positive definite banded symmetric generalized eigenproblems, especially in the case of large scale problems. This paper discusses an algorithm that makes use of two parallel banded solvers in subspace iteration. A shift is introduced to decompose the banded linear systems into relatively independent subsystems and to accelerate the iterations. With this shift, an eigenproblem is mapped efficiently into the ...

On Waveform Multigrid Method APR 93 14 pages
Authors:  Shlomo Ta'asan; Hong Zhang; INSTITUTE FOR COMPUTER APPLICATIONS IN SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING HAMPTON VA
The full text of this report is available for sale.Waveform multigrid method is an efficient method for solving certain classes of time-dependent PDEs. This paper studies the relationship between this method and the analogous multigrid method for steady-state problems. Using a Fourier-Laplace analysis, practical convergence rate estimates of the waveform multigrid iterations are obtained. Experimental results show that the analysis yields accurate performance prediction.... Waveform relaxation, Multigrid, Spectral radius, Fourier-Laplace, Steady-state problem.
