Evaluation of Low Hazardous Air Pollutant Thermoset Adhesives for the Application of Rubber-to-Metal Bonding on Army Tank Pads and Road Wheels Sep 2011 50 pages
Authors:  Ryan D Robinson; Faye R Toulan; Christopher B Stabler; David Flanagan; Henry Feuer; Paul Touchet; John J La Scala; ARMY RESEARCH LAB ADELPHI MD SENSORS AND ELECTRON DEVICES DIRECTORATE
The full text of this report is available for sale. The Environmental Protection Agency is in the process of mandating Defense Land Systems and Miscellaneous Equipment and National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants that will affect Army surface coating operations. Bonding unvulcanized rubber to a metal substrate in the production and replacement of tank treads, track pad, track shoes, and road wheels uses thermoset adhesives and primers with a high hazardous air pollutant (HAP) content. This research focused on ...

MMM-A-121 Federal Specification Adhesive, Bonding Vulcanized Synthetic Rubber to Steel HAP-Free Replacement Feb-2009 26 pages
Authors:  Paul Touchet; Dave Flanagan; Faye R Toulan; Christopher La Stabler; John J Scala; Hank Feuer; ARMY RESEARCH LAB ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND MD WEAPONS AND MATERIALS RESEARCH DIRECTORATE
The full text of this report is available for sale. The U.S. Army uses numerous adhesives and sealants, among other coating materials, that contain significant amounts of hazardous air pollutants (HAPs). This work examines laboratory testing of two of the most highly used adhesives meeting MMM-A-121 specifications throughout the Army. The scope of MMM-A-121 involves adhesives used in bonding vulcanized synthetic rubber to steel. The two most commonly used baseline products meeting the MMM-A-121 specification are 3M-1357 Scotch-Weld and 3M-1300L ...

Laboratory Evaluation of Commercial Coatings for Use by Soldiers in the Field to Lower Operating Temperatures of Collapsible Fuel Tanks FEB 2006 28 pages
Authors:  James Sloan; Paul Touchet; Alan Teets; Dave Flanagan; Charles Pergantis; ARMY RESEARCH LAB ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND MD
The full text of this report is available for sale.Collapsible fuel storage containers currently being used by the U.S. military in South West Asia for Operation Iraqi Freedom are encountering surface temperatures approaching 200 deg F. Consequently, these polyurethane-coated fabric fuel tanks are experiencing catastrophic failures at an alarming rate. The purpose of this work was to survey the market and obtain common off-the-shelf solar reflecting paints and determine the potential of these materials for use as a temperature-reducing ...

Effectiveness of Standard Test Fluids in Evaluating the Fuel Resistance of Elastomers APR 1979 54 pages
Authors:  Paul E. Gatza; Paul Touchet; Floyd P. Powell; ARMY MOBILITY EQUIPMENT RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT COMMAND FORT BELVOIR VA
The full text of this report is available for sale. The fuel resistance of representative elastometric compounds exposed in commercial leaded, low-leaded, and unleaded gasolines is investigated and related to the aromatic content of these fuels. Similar data are obtained for exposure in standard ASTM and military test fuels. The efficacy of these test fuels is discussed and an alternative nonbenzene containing test fluid of 40% aromatic content is proposed for inclusion in ASTM and military standards.
