Inhibition of Scale Growth on 20Cr-25Ni-Nb Stabilised Stainless Steel by Yttrium Ion Implantation Revealed by Analytical Electron Microscopy DEC 88
Authors:  M. J. Bennett; J. A. Desport; M. R. Houlton; P. A. Labun; J. M. Titchmarsh
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only.Yttrium ion implantation significantly improves the oxidation behavior of the 20Cr-25Ni-Nb stabilized stainless steel in carbon dioxide at 750-900 C by the incorporation of this reactive element within the scale. The exact location and chemical state of the yttrium ion were established by transmission and scanning transmission electron microscopy. The implanted yttrium atoms are incorporated as yttria grains and as ionic segregants along the oxide grain boundaries within the outer ...

Acoustic Emission Monitoring of Fatigue in 7010 Aluminium Alloys, APR 1986
Authors:  G. Weatherly; J. M. Titchmarsh; C. B. Scruby
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only.Acoustic emission (AE) has been monitored in test pieces of 7010 aluminum alloy containing growing fatigue cracks. Both high-purity and commercial casts were studied in underaged, peak-aged, and overaged conditions, using tension-tension fatigue with R = 0.1 and 0.5, at crack growth rates in the range 0.1-3 microns/cycle. The reduction of grip noise and discrimination of AE events with sources distant from the plane of the crack were achieved by ...

Metallurgical Observations of a French A508 Class 3 Forging with Respect to Transition Toughness Behaviour, APR 1985
Authors:  S. G. Druce; J. M. Titchmarsh; G. Jordan; A. James; UKAEA ATOMIC ENERGY RESEARCH ESTABLISHMENT HARWELL (ENGLAND)*
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only.A detailed chemical, microstructural and fractographic examination has been conducted on three large fracture toughness specimens chosen to represent the bounds of toughness at 5 C observed in a thick-section A508 Class 3 steel forging. The metallurgical findings are discussed with reference to the literature on microstructure-mechanical property relationships in this class of steel. It is tentatively concluded that fracture toughness in the transition temperature regime is adversely affected by ...

ACOUSTIC EMISSION MONITORING OF FATIGUE IN 7010 ALUMINIUM ALLOYS MAR 84

Surface Segregation in Type 316 Stainless Steel--Part 1: Experimental Procedure and General Trends in Segregation JAN 82
Authors:  M. Wall; C. M. Shepherd; B. C. Edwards; J. M. Titchmarsh; ATOMIC ENERGY RESEARCH ESTABLISHMENT HARWELL (ENGLAND)
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only. The construction and operation of a specimen heating stage is described which enables the analysis of the surface of a flat specimen by Auger Electron Spectroscopy while the specimen is maintained at a temperature of up to 1000 C. This stage has been used to examine the free surface segregation behavior of minor alloying and trace impurity elements in a commercial cast of type 316 stainless steel in the temperature ...

A Comparison of the Microstructure of A508 Class 3 and SA533B Class 1 Steels Following Simulated Post Weld Heat Treatment NOV 81
Authors:  J. M. Titchmarsh; A. F. Bartlett; ATOMIC ENERGY RESEARCH ESTABLISHMENT HARWELL (ENGLAND)
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only. The microstructure of a 150 mm-thick plate of SA533B Class 1 ferritic steel has been examined following a simulated post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) and compared with the microstructure of the as-received, quenched and tempered material. The most noticeable differences were the increased number of acicular Mo(sub 2)C precipitates present and some alignment of dislocations into cell structures following PWHT. A comparison was also made as a function of through thickness ...

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MICROSTRUCTURE AND ACOUSTIC EMISSION IN MN-MO-NI A533B STEEL JUN 81
Authors:  C. B. Scruby; C. Jones; J. M. Titchmarsh; H. N. G. Wadley
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only.the sources of acoustic emission in a steel of the a533b composition with low sulphur content have been investigated using two different recording techniques. first, systematic narrow band (0.1-1.0 mhz) measurements were made of acoustic emission activity during uniaxial tensile tests of specimens with a range of controlled microstructures. mechanical properties and fractographic data were analyzed, an the most probable deformation and fracture mechanisms deduced for these microstructures. it appears ...

A Nickel and Silicon Rich Phase in Irradiated FV548 Steel, JAN 1979
Authors:  T. M. Williams; J. M. Titchmarsh; D. R. Arkell; ATOMIC ENERGY RESEARCH ESTABLISHMENT HARWELL (ENGLAND)
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only.A nickel, silicon and niobium-rich phase observed in heavy ion and neutron-irradiated FV548 steel has been identified as G-phase. It is suggested that the precipitation of nickel and silicon rich phases in austenitic steels during irradiation could reduce the efficiency of silicon as a void swelling inhibitor and may even have a deleterious effect on the long term swelling behaviour of high silicon casts.
