The wetting of nickel, platinum and palladium boride eutectics (ni55b45, ni62 b38, pd72b28, and pt72b28) to polycrystalline graphite has been studied by sessile drop and surface analytical techniques. the wettability is critically influenced by surface segregation of low-level bulk impurities in the alloys. at the melting temperature, the impurities segregate to the surface of the liquid alloy and inhibit wetting. a poorly-wetted droplet with a large contact angle results. good ...

The purpose of this program is the development and characterization of high brightness field emission and field ion sources. Several emitter materials and modes of operation for both field electron and ion sources have been investigated. The most promising sources have been examined with respect to fabrication techniques, source stability and life, spatial energy distribution of the emitted beam. Optical characteristics of the source, e.g. virtual source size, etc., have ...

The purpose of this research program is the development of high brightness field emission and field ion sources. A new method of preparing W/Zr TF cathodes is discussed and life test results of LaB6 field emitters are described. Built up emitters of tantalum and iridium have been examined. Results of experiment and calculation are presented for the energy distribution of field emitted electrons from substrates of varying temperature and work ...

The purpose of this research program is the development of high brightness field emission sources of both ions and electrons by use of field emission phenomena. In this report we concentrate on the liquid alloy (Ga/In (10%)) source. Both ion and electron emission results are reported along with analysis of the effect of various source configuration on its performance. The angular distribution has been measured for ion emission in a ...

The purpose of this research program is the development of high brightness field emission sources of both ions and electrons by use of field emission phenomena. Fabrication procedures and evaluation of emission characteristics have been examined for lanthanum hexaboride field electron emitters. Field electron emission from a liquid gallium source has also been developed and examined. Emission occurs in a pulse mode with 50 to 100 A peak currents in ...

Thermal desorption and surface diffusion of cesium coatings on a tungsten substrate have been investigated by pulsed-field-emission microscopy. Measured values of the heat of desorption for neutral cesium atoms vary with cesium coverage from 18 kilocalories per mole at 1.0 monolayer of cesium to 89 kilocalories per mole as the degree of coverage approaches zero. Electric field strengths up to 13 megavolts per centimeter had negligible effect, within experimental error, ...
