Amorphization during mechanical alloying has been studied in the equiatomic Ti-Al system. An amorphous phase is formed first, and further milling causes crystallization. Intermetallic AlTi is formed which transforms to the amorphous phase as milling continues. Al atoms dissolve in the Ti lattice during the early stages of amorphization, resulting in increasing disorder in the system. Amorphization during milling is affected by both diffusion and defects, with defects playing a ...
The enhancement of solid solubility limits of AlCo intermetallic compound, prepared by high-energy ball milling, has been studied. The powder mixtures consisted of Co-50 at% Al, Co-71.4 at% Al, Co-76.5 at% Al, and Co-81.8 at% Al, corresponding to AlCo, Al5Co2, Al13Co4, and Al9Co2, respectively. X-ray diffraction and TEM analysis showed that AlCo phase was formed during milling, and in Co-81.8 at% Al this phase was preceded by an amorphous phase. ...
