The effects of weak ionization on the strength of shock waves in supersonic gas flows were studied in an experimental program. Claims that weak ionization can substantially reduce shock wave strength, independently of any plasma heating effects, were evaluated. Experiments were conducted in both shock tubes and in supersonic, steady flow, plasma wind- tunnels. Temperatures and ionization levels in the flows were measured. It was demonstrated that shocks can be ...

Our research is concerned with the development of high performance simulations of non-equilibrium flows in arcjets, with the specific aim of identifying and quantifying frozen flow loss mechanisms and channels. Further details of the research can be found in technical articles cited in this report, as well as in several forthcoming papers.

This research explores ways of reducing frozen flow losses via state- resolved numerical simulations (quasi 1-D, 2D, and 2D with swirl). Frozen flow losses in molecular vibration, rotation, and electronic excitation are believed to account for significant losses in thrust and efficiency of arcjet thrusters. This report summarizes the accomplishments in the first two years of a four year research program designed to quantify frozen flow losses, and to generate ...

The purpose of this research is to understand and quantify the mechanisms responsible for evaporative erosion in steady state magnetoplasmadynamic (MPD) thrusters. This is necessary in order to predict thruster characteristics and lifetimes for a given design. The Back-EMF theory of Onset has been refined and expanded to enable prediction of erosion rates for steady state, self-field MPD thrusters. This theory is capable of explaining both the observed oscillations as ...

Significant developments have been made toward a comprehensive theory of Onset and erosion in steady-state self-field MPD thrusters. The Back-EMF onset theory predicts that the middle region of the cathode (i.e. away from the inlet and exit) and the near inlet and exit regions of the anode are susceptible to severe erosion. This erosion occurs due to excessive electron bombardment at a critical value of the local sheath voltage drop ...
