Arctic Contamination Research and Assessment Program - Monitoring and Assessing Contamination in Arctic Alaska 03 DEC 97 13 pages
Authors:  Gunter Weller; Patricia Anderson; Glenn E. Shaw; Richard Benner; Daniel Jaffe; ALASKA UNIV FAIRBANKS
The full text of this report is available for sale. The atmosphere of the Arctic is charged with gaseous and particulate material, mostly of industrial origin during the winter and spring months. Assessing the health and environmental impacts of this phenomenon, known as Arctic Haze, in the U. S. Arctic regions represents the long term goal of this research project. The haze is primarily sulfate, but it also contains industrial signatures of trace heavy metals which have been used to ...

Arctic Haze: Natural or Pollution? AUG 1983
Authors:  Kenneth A. Rahn; Glenn E. Shaw; RHODE ISLAND UNIV NARRAGANSETT CENTER FOR ATMOSPHERIC CHEMISTRY STUDIES
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only.Routine aerosol sampling at Barrow and Fairbanks continued. The basic four-year record of certain constituents in the Barrow aerosol showed distinct and reproducible seasonal variations. Cascade-impactor samples from Barrow and Europe were taken and analyzed for sulfate and trace elements. S02 at Bear Island during winter was found to be highly pulsed and associated mainly with cyclonic trajectories from eastern Europe and the USSR. On the basis of a wide ...

Arctic Haze: Natural or Pollution? AUG 1980
Authors:  Kenneth A. Rahn; Glenn E. Shaw; RHODE ISLAND UNIV KINGSTON GRADUATE SCHOOL OF OCEANOGRAPHY
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only. The overall chemical composition of the Arctic aerosol was better defined; sulfur and carbon dominate. Different Mn/V ratios on different sides of the Arctic were found; both were inconsistent with eastern North American source. 222Rn data for Barrow were produced. They indicated a source to the north. Arguments were developed for a Eurasian source and against a North American source of Arctic aerosol. Chemical and physical aspects of long-range transport ...

Arctic Haze: Natural or Pollution AUG 1978

Arctic Haze: A Chemical, Physical, Optical and Meteorological Study 01 AUG 1976
Authors:  Kenneth A. Rahn; Glenn E. Shaw; RHODE ISLAND UNIV KINGSTON GRADUATE SCHOOL OF OCEANOGRAPHY
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only.During April and May 1976, bands of Arctic haze over Barrow, Alaska were studied by means of a light aircraft. The program included condensation- nucleus counts, radiation measurements, and filter samples for elemental analysis. Layers of Arctic haze were definitely present during the five-seek period, and were equally detectable by eye or with nucleus counts. A single major episode of haze bands occurred, associated with winds from the south. Analysis ...
