Oriented Z-Type Langmuir-Blodgett Films from A Soluble Asymmetrically Substituted Polydiacetylene 31 OCT 95 32 pages
Authors:  D. W. Cheong; W. H. Kim; L. A. Samuelson; J. Kumar; S. K. Tripathy; MASSACHUSETTS UNIV LOWELL DEPT OF CHEMISTRY
The full text of this report is available for sale.A soluble, asymmetric polydiacetylene has been shown to form stable monolayers at the air-water interface of a Langmuir trough. The monolayers of this unconventional amphiphilic polymer could be repeatedly deposited onto hydrophobic substrates during every up-stroke cycle of the vertical dipping method to form uniform Z-type multilayers. Characterization of the precise orientation of the polymer main chain has been carried out to determine the spatial correlation between the nonlinear optical ...

Enzyme Catalyzed 2-D Polymerization of Phenol and Aniline Derivatives on a Langmuir-Blodgett Through 31 DEC 92 7 pages
Authors:  F. Bruno; J. A. Akkara; L. A. Samuelson; B. K. Mandal; D. L. Kaplan; MASSACHUSETTS UNIV LOWELL DEPT OF CHEMISTRY
The full text of this report is available for sale.Previous studies have shown that polymeric materials may be synthesized from substituted phenols and aromatic amine compounds through a Horseradish Peroxidase (HRP) enzyme catalyzed reaction in the bulk. We have developed a novel approach for this enzyme mediated polymer synthesis which involves in-situ polymerization using a Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique. Here, the LB technique is used to organize and manipulate the reactants during polymerization at the molecular level. This methodology provides ...

The Monomolecular Organization of a Photodynamic Protein System Through Specific Surface Recognition of Streptavidin to Biotinylated LB Films 03 MAY 91 24 pages
Authors:  L. A. Samuelson; P. Miller; D. M. Galotti; K. A. Marx; J. Kumar; LOWELL UNIV MA DEPT OF CHEMISTRY
The full text of this report is available for sale. This paper focuses on a novel methodology for the two-dimensional ordering of a photodynamic protein system using the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique. The specific versus non-specific surface recognition of biotin or biotinylated LB monolayers by streptavidin and avidin conjugated phycoerthrin was investigated. Both avidin and streptavidin conjugates, when injected under the biotinylated monolayer, were found to preferentially adsorb to the biotin while at the air-water interface. Pressure-area isotherms displayed a biotin- ...

Streptavidin-Phycoerythrin Conjugated Proteins Bound to Biotin on Langmuir- Blodgett Films of Biotinylated Lipid Monolayers 03 MAY 91 7 pages
Authors:  L. A. Samuelson; D. L. Kaplan; K. A. Marx; P. Miller; D. M. Galloti; LOWELL UNIV MA DEPT OF CHEMISTRY
The full text of this report is available for sale.Studies involving the specific and non-specific surface recognition of biotin on biotinylated LB lipid monolayers by streptavidin and avidin conjugated phycoerythrin are presented. Both streptavidin and avidin conjugates were injected under the monolayer and found to preferentially adsorb to the biotinylated monolayers at the air-water interface. Pressure-area isotherms displayed a biotin-streptavidin/avidin complex dependent increase in surface pressure at expanded areas indicating protein adsorption. The binding of protein was confirmed by ...

Monolayer Formation Characteristics of Novel Organic Molecules with Nonlinear Optically Active Moieties 31 MAY 89 24 pages
Authors:  S. S. Kumar; R. S. Kumar; L. A. Samuelson; J. Kumar; LOWELL UNIV MA POLYMER SCIENCE PROGRAM
The full text of this report is available for sale.Organic materials have recently been recognized as promising candidates for nonlinear optics (NLO) applications in view of their fast response time and large non-resonant nonlinear effects in comparison with their inorganic counterparts. Novel organic materials that form molecular crystals and polymers with optimized molecular structure are therefore being synthesized and their NLO response assessed in attempts to obtain superior material performance. Another advantage of organic and polymeric materials is their ...

Theoretical Evaluation of the Structural Performance of Swedish Fighter Aircraft Windshields Subjected to Bird Impact. DEC 1983
Authors:  L. A. Samuelson; F. Nilsson; L. Sornas; IFM AKUSTIKBYRAN A B STOCKHOLM (SWEDEN)
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only.High velocity bird impact characteristics were studied theoretically and the critical velocity, windshield deflection, birdraulics and associated phenomena in Swedish fighter aircraft were predicted. The investigation was carried out for the Swedish Air Force in close cooperation with the Saab Scania Aerospace Co and the results were used to optimize the test program and to propose design improvements for existing crew enclosures.

Stability and Ultimate Strength of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic Panels, 26 AUG 80
Authors:  L. A. Samuelson; P. Vestergren; L. Knutsson; K. G. Wangberg; V. Gamziukas
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only. The initial purpose of the present investigation was to demonstrate the buckling and post-buckling behavior of thin-walled plate structures under inplane shear or compressive loads and to apply existing theories in order to analyze the stability carried out on stiffened and unstiffened panels under compressive or shear loads and in combination with a lateral pressure. Graphite fiber, fiberglass and Kevlar reinforced composites were used as the materials for the various ...
