A Faster Technique for the Transformation of Universal Transverse Mercator Projected Raster Images into a Geodetic Projection 11 MAR 2005 16 pages
Authors:  Hillary C. Mesick; Elias Z. Ioup; John T. Sample; NAVAL RESEARCH LAB STENNIS SPACE CENTER MS MARINE GEOSCIENCES DIV
The full text of this report is available for sale.Often it is necessary to transform a georeferenced raster image from one projection to another. This report describes an efficient method for performing Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) to Geodetic projection transformations. The reprojected images are suitable for applications that require high accuracy and can be seamlessly combined with preexisting Geodetic data. The procedure can be abstracted to convert between any two projection types.

Analysis of Global and Selected Geographic Areas With Depths Between 50 and 100 Feet 14 FEB 2003 29 pages
Authors:  John T. Sample; Chad A. Steed; Frank P. McCreedy; Michael M. Harris; NAVAL RESEARCH LAB STENNIS SPACE CENTER MS MARINE GEOSCIENCES DIV
The full text of this report is available for sale. This report identifies additional areas of the ocean that shallow draft Littoral Combat Ships (LCS) could sail which are beyond the safe operating depth of conventional deep draft warships. Depth limits used in this report are 50 feet (15.24 meters) for the LCS and 100 feet (30.41 meters) for deep draft vessels. Approximately .91% of the world's ocean area lies between the 50-foot and 100-foot depth contours, or 1.27 x ...

Multibeam Bathymetry from a Mine-Hunting Military Sonar 11 JUN 2002 17 pages
Authors:  William E. Avera; Michael M. Harris; Leonard D. Bibee; S. Lingsch; John T. Sample; NAVAL RESEARCH LAB STENNIS SPACE CENTER MS
The full text of this report is available for sale.Multibeam bathymetry is obtained from the AN/AQS-20 mine-hunting sonar system. The AN/AQS-20 Volume Search Sonar uses a swath of beams directed downward and perpendicular to the direction of motion to cover more than 180 degrees around the sensor. This coverage creates a coarse-sampling, multibeam sonar that can measure the bottom depth. Raw beamformed data are available from a dedicated experiment to demonstrate the feasibility for using this system to update ...

Using Wavelet Transforms in 3D Mapping 28 FEB 2002 9 pages
Authors:  Roy V. Ladner; John T. Sample; Kevin B. Shaw; NAVAL RESEARCH LAB STENNIS SPACE CENTER MS MARINE GEOSCIENCES DIV
The full text of this report is available for sale. The Naval Research Laboratory's Digital Mapping, Charting and Geodesy Analysis Program is Investigating the application of wavelet technology to terrain approximation in 3D mapping. The wavelet transform allows the lab to obtain the frequency content of gridded elevation data while retaining the spatial context. They use a 2D discrete wavelet transform (DWT) to reduce Digital Terrain Elevation Data to low and high frequency components. The low frequency components represent widespread ...
