Microfluidic Cell Volume Biosensor for High Throughput Drug Screening 13 JUL 2005 6 pages
Authors:  Daniel A. Ateya; Frederick Sachs; Susan Z. Hua; STATE UNIV OF NEW YORK AT BUFFALO DEPT OF MECHANICAL AND AEROSPACE ENGINEERING
The full text of this report is available for sale. The maintenance of cell volume is critical to health. Cell volume change reflects many biological and physicological processes. We have developed a lab-chip to measure cell volume change in real-time with high sensitivity and resolution, and applicable to both adherent and suspended cell populations. The volume change was detected by measuring the impedance of extra-cellular solution within a microfluidic chamber containing the cells. Using microfabrication to make precise chamber dimensions, ...

Mechanically Sensitive Ion Channels: Biological Models for Nanoscale Stress Sensors, 1994
Authors:  Frederick Sachs
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only. There is little controversy about the existence of mechanical effects on cells. With the exception of mechanically sensitive ion channels, no other direct transducer is known. This is not to suggest that SACs are the only mechanical transducers, but because of their high turnover rate, the one most easily studied. We expect to find other stretch sensitive enzymes in the membrane and within the cytoskeleton of the cell. (Author).
