Laser Beam Welding of HY80 and HY100 Steels Using Hot Welding Wire Addition 92
Authors:  R. H. Phillips; E. A. Metzbower; RESERVED SOURCE*
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only.Laser beam welds incorporating a hot welding wire filler metal addition technique have been successfully produced in HY80 and HY100 steels; plate thickness of 13 and 26 mm were welded by this technique in these experiments; the evaluation included radiographic and metallographic examinations, hardness. Charpy V-notch tests over the temperature range -68 to 20 C and fractographic examinations; hardness traverses across the hot wire addition welds showed a significant reduction ...

A Knowledge-Based Approach to Generative Process Planning. NOV 1985
Authors:  R. H. Phillips; C. B. Mouleeswaran
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only.

Weld Repair of Cracked Defa Cannon Mount Frames FEB 85
Authors:  J. C. Ritter; R. H. Phillips; B. F. Dixon; MATERIALS RESEARCH LABS ASCOT VALE (AUSTRALIA)
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only. The weld repair of fatigue cracks found in the mounting frames of the Defa gun pack, fitted to Mirage III aircraft, is described. These cracks, caused by normal gun firing stresses, occurred well short of the frame design life as a result of metallurgical degradation in the form of a decarburized layer on the surface of the cast steel frames. Weld repair was by the Tungsten Inert-Gas process, using a ...

CRACKING IN THE TRANSVARESTRAINT TEST. PART 2. THE PATTERN OF SOLIDIFICATION CRACKING MAR 84
Authors:  B. F. Dixon; R. H. Phillips; C. O. Malmgren; J. C. Ritter
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only.the authors show how the combined use of metallographic and radiographic inspection techniques has provided a three dimensional picture of the pattern of cracking generated in ferritic weld metal during transvarestraint testing. using this information and a consideration of the mechanism by which cracks are created, the size and shape of the weld metal crack susceptible zone are determined. (author)

CRACKING IN THE TRANSVARESTRAINT TEST. PART 1. A NEW PROCEDURE FOR ASSESSMENT OF CRACKING FEB 84
Authors:  B. F. Dixon; R. H. Phillips; J. C. Ritter
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only.the authors describe a new radiographic technique developed to evaluate the extent of weld metal solidification cracking generated in the transvarestraint test. it is more accurate than assessment procedures currently in use and is far less time consuming than most of them. (author)

Fractography and Mechanisms of High-Temperature Cracking in Ferritic Steel Weldments 80
Authors:  R. H. Phillips
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only.Scanning electron microscopy was used to study heat-affected-zone liquidation cracking and filler metal solidification cracking in HY-80 welds. The technique was successful in discriminating between the two types of weld defects. The characterization of the crack surfaces is described and illustrated.

WELD HEAT-AFFECTED ZONE LIQUATION CRACKING AND HOT DUCTILITY IN HIGH- STRENGTH FERRITIC STEELS AUG 77
Authors:  R. H. Phillips; M. F. Jordan
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only.in this paper, the authors examine the correlation between hot- ductility test data obtained in simulated weld thermal cycles and weld heat- affected zone (haz) liquation cracking in ferritic, low-alloy steels of the en 24, sae 4130, and astm a387b types. the work covered steels containing various levels of carbon, sulphur, and phosphorus whose cracking susceptibility had already been quantitatively assessed. it was shown that hot-ductility testing under the conditions ...

LIQUATION CRACKING IN THE WELD HEAT-AFFECTED ZONE OF HIGH-STRENGTH FERRITIC STEELS DEC 76
Authors:  R. H. Phillips; M. F. Jordan
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only.AN INVESTIGATION HAS BEEN MADE OF THE EFFECT OF COMPOSITION AND WELDING VARIABLES ON LIQUATION CRACKING IN THE WELD HEAT-AFFECTED ZONE OF LOW- ALLOY STEELS TO SPECIFICATIONS SAE 4130, EN 24, AND ASTMA 387B. IT INVOLVED EXAMINATION OF BEAD-ON-PLATE CRACKING TESTS MADE USING THE METAL-INERT-GAS ARC WELDING PROCESS. IT WAS SHOWN THAT CRACKING OCCURRED IN A DISCRETE ZONE ADJACENT TO THE FUSION BOUNDARY IN WHICH LIQUATION OF INCLUSIONS HAD TAKEN ...

IMPROVED TECHNIQUES FOR DETERMINING TRANSFORMATION TEMPERATURES DURING SIMULATED WELDING CONDITIONS, DEC 1967
Authors:  R. H. Phillips; DEFENCE STANDARDS LABS MARIBYRNONG (AUSTRALIA)
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only.A study has been made of the errors occurring in the determination of transformation temperatures in low hardenability steel specimens thermally cycled to simulate welding conditions. Thermal gradients in the rapidly cooling sample were a source of error in the dilatometric method. Some ways of reducing the errors are discussed. The transformation temperatures determined by dilatometry are compared with those obtained by thermal analysis. (Author)
