An ecological risk assessment framework was applied to characterize aquatic risks associated with hazardous waste disposal at Naval Construction Battalion Center (NCBC) Davisville, Rhode Island. An initial screening phase (I) assessed exposure and related that exposure to toxicological endpoints for bivalves, amphipods, sea urchins, and biomarker assays. Results showed little evidence of major contamination in sediments or tissues except for relatively high levels of polychlorinated biphenols (PBC), butyltins compounds (TBT), ...
The Naval Construction Battalion Center (NCBC) in Davisville, Rhode Island, has been the subject of a joint ecological research program by the Navy and Environmental Protection Agency. Allen Harbor, a small embayment of Narragansett Bay adjacent to NCBC, was used to develop research and monitoring methods for ecological risk assessment. Two sites on the National Priorities List were of particular concern: (1) a 15-acre landfill used from 1946 to 1972 ...
This report evaluates the use of the cytogenetic technique of sister chromatid exchange (SCE) to measure potential mutagenic activity associated with contaminated dredged material. The three primary objectives were to test the applicability of the SCE technique, to field verify any responses observed in the laboratory, and to determine the degree of correlation between the bioaccumulation of contaminants and the SCE response. This project was part of the US Environmental ...
