Propagation of Regional Phases: Observations and Theory 30 SEP 91 103 pages
Authors:  J. A. Orcutt; M. A. Hedlin; SCRIPPS INSTITUTION OF OCEANOGRAPHY LA JOLLA CA
The full text of this report is available for sale.In this study we present the results of investigations dealing with three topics. (1) We have continued our investigation of the influence the regular repetition of features in seismograms, introduced at the source and/or during propagation by layer resonance, has on the spectrum of the recorded coda. We have developed an automatic algorithm that discriminates mining explosions from nuclear explosions and earthquakes. (2) We consider the influence large crustal inhomogeneities, ...

Seismic Detection and Discrimination Using Ocean-Bottom Seismographs MAY 1981
Authors:  Leroy M. Dorman; J. A. Orcutt; Thomas H. Jordan; CALIFORNIA UNIV SAN DIEGO LA JOLLA
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only.Around January 29, 1980 a mild storm occurred on the Southern California coast. During this time one of our ocean bottom seismographs (O.B.S.) was periodically recording noise samples at 31 deg N, 119 deg 48 min W, about 370 km offshore in 4 km of water. The noise energy in the 1-3 Hz frequency range correlates most strongly with the wave height on the nearby coast. The local and distant ...

Seismic Detection and Discrimination Using Ocean-Bottom Seismographs. SEP 1979
Authors:  L. M. Dorman; J. A. Orcutt; T. H. Jordan; SCRIPPS INSTITUTION OF OCEANOGRAPHY LA JOLLA CA
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only.Research progress on seismic detection and discrimination using ocean-bottom seismographs (OBS's) is outlined. During this first year of DARPA contract work, our investigations have been focused primarily on using existing OBS data to address the problem of sea-floor seismic noise and to constrain models of the near-bottom seismic environment. We have completed noise studies at six of our previously occupied OBS sites. The noise levels of typical amplitude spectra roll ...
