Determination of Rock Mass Rating and Deformation Moduli - 14 Cross Sections of Portugues Dam Foundation - December 1999 DEC 2000 47 pages
Authors:  M. E. Glynn; Johannes L. Wibowo; James B. Warriner; Glenn A. Nicholson; ENGINEER RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT CENTER VICKSBURG MS GEOTECHNICAL AND STRUCTURES LAB
The full text of this report is available for sale. This report describes the development of rock mass rating values for the purpose of estimating rock mass moduli for the Portugues Dam, Ponce, Puerto Rico. The Serafim and Pereira (1983) correlation of Rock Mass Rating to modulus was used in the analysis. Fourteen geologic cross sections were evaluated which were widely distributed along the foundation axis. Rock Mass Ratings were determined for each lithologic unit depicted in these cross sections ...

Monitoring Groundwater Levels Using a Time-Domain Reflectometry (TDR) pulser JUL 97 46 pages
Authors:  Glenn A. Nicholson; Jeff F. Powell; Kelvin M. O'Connor; ARMY ENGINEER WATERWAYS EXPERIMENT STATION VICKSBURG MS GEOTECHNICAL LAB
The full text of this report is available for sale.A rugged, self-calibrating, time-domain reflectometer (TDR) device for monitoring groundwater elevations in piezometers was developed and demonstrated. The primary advantage of the TDR device over conventional downhole transducer technology is that the electronics are fixed at the surface where they are accessible and easy to maintain. The TDR instrumentation is also simple to install and does not require field calibration.
