Review of the Current Status of Four-Dimensional Ionospheric Imaging JUN 2006 19 pages
Authors:  G. S. Bust; C. N. Mitchell; TEXAS UNIV AT AUSTIN APPLIED RESEARCH LABS
The full text of this report is available for sale.Recent developments in tomographic imaging allow the use of GPS satellite data to image the Earth's ionosphere. Ground-based GPS receivers monitor the Earth's ionosphere continuously and a comprehensive database of ionospheric measurements suitable for tomographic processing now exists. The tomographic inversion of these GPS data in a three-dimensional time-dependent inversion algorithm can reveal the spatial and temporal distribution of ionospheric electron density. This new technique is unique for studying ionospheric ...

Multi-Instrument Data Analysis System (MIDAS) Imaging of the Ionosphere FEB 2002 31 pages
Authors:  C. N. Mitchell; P. S. Cannon; BATH UNIV (UNITED KINGDOM)
The full text of this report is available for sale.A new technique has been developed to reveal the temporal and spatial distribution of ionization in the ionosphere and plasmasphere. The technique uses freely-available GPS satellite data over the continents of the Northern Hemisphere to produce fully four-dimensional movies of the ionization distribution. In this report a quantitative, large-scale study has been undertaken to evaluate the technique over the USA. The research focuses on two periods. The first is a ...
