The Genetic Basis of Pasteur's Attenuation of Bacillus anthracis Cultures 85
Authors:  John W. Ezzell; Perry Mikesell; Bruce E. Ivins; Stephen H. Leppla; ARMY MEDICAL RESEARCH INST OF INFECTIOUS DISEASES FORT DETRICK MD
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only.Few microbial pathogens have had as great an impact on the development of the science of medical bacteriology as Bacillus anthracis. It was from studies on this etiologic agent of anthrax, during the mid-1800s, that many of the fundamental concepts were developed upon which our present understanding of infection and immunity are based. B. anthracis is a rod-shaped, Gram-positive bacterium whose spores allow the organism to persist in the environment ...

Plasmids of Legionella Species 18 JUN 1982
Authors:  Perry Mikesell; Gregory B. Knudson; ARMY MEDICAL RESEARCH INST OF INFECTIOUS DISEASES FORT DETRICK MD
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only.Plasmids are extrachromosomal genetic elements of bacteria that are not essential for survival of the host under most circumstances but often carry genes that allow the host to compete more successfully in adverse environments. Plasmids have been shown to carry genes which code for toxins, such as botulinum, diphtheria, streptococcus erythrogenic, and the enterotoxin of Escherichia coli. The sudden outbreak of a highly infectious disease caused by a multiply drug-resistant ...

Plasmids of 'Legionella' Species 09 MAR 1982 11 pages
Authors:  Perry Mikesell; Gregory B. Knudson; ARMY MEDICAL RESEARCH INST OF INFECTIOUS DISEASES FORT DETRICK MD
The full text of this report is available for sale.Plasmids are extrachromosomal genetic elements that normally are not essential for survival of the host, but often carry genes which allow the host to compete more successfully in adverse environments. These genes code for many factors, the most medically important of which are toxin, drug resistance, and virulence factors. The possible involvement of plasmids in legionellosis was suggested by reports of cytotoxin and B-lactamase production and the virulent to avirulent ...

Plasmid Isolation in Legionella pneumophila and Legionella-like Organisms. 22 AUG 1980
Authors:  Perry Mikesell; J. W. Ezzell; Gregory B. Knudson; ARMY MEDICAL RESEARCH INST OF INFECTIOUS DISEASES FREDERICK MD
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only.Agarose gel electrophoresis was employed to screen nine strains of Legionella-like bacteria and one strain of Legionella pneumophila for the presence of extrachromosomal deoxyribonucleic acid. Cryptic plasmids were found in three of the isolates examined. A purification protocol was devised which consolidates the central tenets of several existing isolation techniques into a single procedure. Plasmid molecular weights were determined to range from 46.6 to 59.8 megadaltons (Mdal). (Author)

Plasmid Detection in Legionella pneumophila and Legionella-like Organisms. 30 APR 1980
Authors:  Perry Mikesell; J. W. Ezzell; Gregory B. Knudson; ARMY MEDICAL RESEARCH INST OF INFECTIOUS DISEASES FREDERICK MD
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only.Five strains of bacteria, designated Legionella-like organisms, and one strain of Legionella pneumophila were examined for the presence of extrachromosomal deoxyribonucleic acid. Cryptic plasmids were found in three of the isolates. (Author)
