The Deep Vehicles Branch of the U. S. Naval Oceanographic Office has employed six manned submersibles on nearly 100 dives for the purpose of developing instrumentation and techniques for oceanographic surveys. Experience has shown that instrument systems have not kept pace with the development of submersible capabilities.
