Histone, isolated from the calf thymus gland, possesses the ability to block the synthesis of DNA-containing viruses, apparently by forming a histone-virus DNA complex, thereby excluding the virus-DNA from the process of reproduction of the virus.
In the early stages of cell infection with the smallpox vaccine virus (2-2 1/2 hours) a factor is formed which ensures the deproteinization of the virus nucleocapsid. This factor also ensures the possibility of the reactivation of heated virus. The deproteinization factor has a protein nature and is coded in the genome of the cell-host.
