 | An investigation to determine the ranges of various lateral-directional characteristics required to provide adequate flying qualities for turning manoeuvres at low speed was undertaken using an airborne V/STOL aircraft simulator. Five parameters were varied in a systematic manner: the damping ratio, the frequency and the ratio of the roll-angle to the sideslip-angle in the Dutch roll mode, together with the damping ratio and frequency of the numerator quadratic of the ... |

 | An investigation to determine the ranges of various lateral directional characteristics required to provide adequate flying qualities for turning maneuvers at low speed was undertaken using an airborne V/STOL aircraft simulator. Five parameters were varied in a systematic manner: the damping ratio, the frequency, and the ratio and the frequency of the numerator of the roll-angle to aileron-control-input transfer function. The pilots performed a low speed, visual maneuvering task and ... |

| FLIGHT ASSESSMENT OF A VARIABLE-STABILITY HELICOPTER FOR STOL SIMULATIONS AND EVALUATION OF THE INFLUENCE OF SEVERAL LATERAL-DIRECTIONAL STABILITY DERIVATIVES. |

 | A particular STOL aircraft (the De Havilland of Canada, 'Otter') was simulated using a variable-stability helicopter to assess the simulator's capabilities in duplicating the flight characteristics of this class of aircraft. Direct comparisons were made by the pilots through alternate flights in the simulator and on the actual aircraft, and they concluded that a very convincing simulation could be effected, particularly with respect to lateral-directional characteristics. Using the 'Otter' as ... |

 | A variable stability helicopter capable of altering its characteristics in the three rotational degrees of freedom as well as the heave or vertical degree of freedom was developed and utilized on a variety of V/STOL handling qualities research programs. The report describes the simulator systems and outlines its capabilities. (Author) |

| A FLIGHT INVESTIGATION OF VARIOUS STABILITY AUGMENTATION SYSTEMS FOR A JET-LIFT V/STOL AIRCRAFT (HAWKER-SIDDELEY P1127) USING AN AIRBORNE SIMULATOR, |
FEB 1968 |

| Authors:

 | A flight investigation of various stability augmentation systems for jet-lift V/STOL aircraft, using a variable stability helicopter, is reported. The main emphasis was placed on overcoming the directional divergence due to the unstable weathercock stability that occurs at low airspeeds, but short investigations of a roll stabilizer to reduce the pilot work load, and a pitch stabilizing device to assist the pilot to maintain attitude in the presence of an ... |
