 | In Phase I, die-swell and torsional balance experiments were performed to compare the shear and normal stresses developed by AMK (0.3 percent FM-9 + glycol/amine in Jet A) and 0.1 percent ARCO in Jet A. Capillary tube experiments show that AMK shear thickens at a critical shear rate, reaches a maximum viscosity, and then shear thins at higher shear rates.  | Experiments are described which demonstrate the feasibility of degrading AMK in a single pass with a system consisting of a hydraulic fuel pump from a TF30 engine and several types of flow restrictors such as packed tubes or needle valves.  | Flow properties of antimisting kerosine (0.3% FM-9 Jet A),such as filtration resistance and apparent viscosity, are greatly improved by increasing the temperature to 140 C or by the addition of a fuel-soluble surfactant. This is achieved by preventing flow-induced hydrogen bonding that results in the buildup of a gel-like structure.  | A dilute solution of polymeric antimist additive is found to offer unusually high resistance to flow through metal filters. This apparent anomaly is not due to filter plugging or polymer adsorption but may be explained in terms of an elongational viscosity that cannot be observed in ordinary viscometric flow.
