Supercritical Water Oxidation Studies: Understanding the Chemistry and Electrochemistry of SCWO Systems FEB 97 328 pages
Authors:  Digby D. Macdonald; Heidi Arthur; Ritwik Biswas; Keith Eklund; Nobuyoshi Hara; PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIV UNIVERSITY PARK CENTER FOR ADVANCED MATERIALS
The full text of this report is available for sale.SuperCritical Water Oxidation (SCWO) is being actively developed as a means of destroying highly toxic organic waste and as a way of reducing the volume of low-level nuclear waste. The technology employs water at temperatures above the critical temperature (374.15K) as the reaction medium as well as high partial pressures of oxygen or high concentrations of hydrogen peroxide. These conditions lead to extraordinarily high corrosion rates within + or -50 ...

The Characterization of Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion (MIC) under Cathodic Protection Conditions OCT 96 82 pages
Authors:  Digby D. Macdonald; Richard Unz; PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIV UNIVERSITY PARK COLL OF EARTH AND MINERAL SCIENCES
The full text of this report is available for sale. The goal of the present research is to investigate the effectiveness of cathodic protection in preventing, halting, or limiting the microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) of carbon steel substrates in seawater. MIC is defined as the corrosion resulting from the interaction of bacteria, especially Sulfate Reducing Bacteria (SRB), and their biological end products with metal surfaces. In order to address this problem, four key issues are being investigated. Firstly, the chemical ...

Characterization of Microbially-Influenced Corrosion (MIC) Under Cathodic Protection Conditions 01 OCT 94 17 pages
Authors:  Digby D. Macdonald; Richard Unz; PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIV UNIVERSITY PARK CENTER FOR ADVANCED MATERIALS
The full text of this report is available for sale. The corrosion of carbon steel due to the metabolic activity of bacteria, specifically sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB), is known as Microbially-Influenced Corrosion (MIC). This type of corrosion usually results in a form of localized corrosion, e.g., crevice corrosion. The present research is intended to explore the effectiveness of cathodic protection in eliminating or limiting the destructive effects of MIC.

International Symposium on Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (2nd) Held in Santa Barbara, California on 12-17 July 1992 (Extended Abstracts) 92 286 pages
Authors:  Digby D. Macdonald; PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIV UNIVERSITY PARK CENTER FOR ADVANCED MATERIALS*
The full text of this report is available for sale. This grant was made available to partially support a workshop on electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The Symposium provided a forum for recent advances and applications of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy to a variety of problems related to general electrochemical mechanisms and models, passivity, electrochemistry in non-aqueous environments, batteries and fuel cells, mass transport, photoelectrochemistry and semiconductors, and membranes and biological systems. The extended abstracts provided in this document are for talks and ...

Development of Electro Supercapacitors NOV 91 54 pages
Authors:  Digby D. Macdonald; Subhash C. Narang; SRI INTERNATIONAL MENLO PARK CA
The full text of this report is available for sale.Nonfluorinated proton conducting superionic molecular tunnel electrolytes (PSMTE) exhibiting high proton conductivity (approximately 10 exp-2 S/cm) have been synthesized. The highly hygroscopic nature of these polymers yielding deliquescent films has precluded their use in supercapacitors. Fluorinated analogs of these PSMTE's were synthesized to provide higher conductivity and greater hydrophobicity. Fluorinated PSMTE's exhibit higher conductivity than Nafion (1.3 x 10 exp-2 vs. 2.1 x 10 exp-4 S/cm) under identical conditions of ...

A Study to Determine the Mechanisms of Corrosion of Copper Alloys in Sulfide-Polluted Seawater. 01 AUG 1978
Authors:  Barry C. Syrett; Sharon S. Wing; Digby D. Macdonald; SRI INTERNATIONAL MENLO PARK CA
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only.As part of a continuing program to determine the mechanisms of corrosion of copper-nickel alloys in sulfide-polluted seawater, the investigators have conducted flow loop experiments, using unpolluted aerated seawater, and also rotating cylinder experiments, using seawater contaminated with various sulfur- containing species. The series of flow loop experiments were performed to obtain baseline corrosion rates for copper-nickel alloys under carefully controlled hydrodynamic and mass transfer conditions. This loop will also ...
