This paper proposes the use of a two-dimensional planar optical waveguide as a broadcast medium in a semiconductor-wafer scale optical interconnection network. The use of a 2-D guide as a substitute for a conventional star coupler is seen to eliminate the need for optical fiber or integrated optical waveguides together with all precision alignments between the waveguides, sources, and detectors.
