We have examined the structure of various diacetylene monolayers and multilayers deposited by the Langmuir Blodgett technique or one of its variations. Various experimental techniques were used including x-ray diffraction, electron diffraction (ED), and scanning force microscopy (SFM). In particular salts of the monomers CH3-(CH2)n-C(triple bonds)C-(CH2)m-COOH were deposited and polymerized by exposure to UV light. The purpose of this paper is to compare the information obtained by these three tools ...

Initial work was performed on the preparation of poly(p-phenylene vinylene) and poly(p-phenylene) alignment layers for twisted nematic liquid crystal displays. Soluble precursor amphiphilic polymers, spread at the gas- water interface, were aligned during Langmuir-Blodgett deposition. The structure or the precursor multilayers has been investigated before and after curing of the multilayers to the desired polymers. Initial tests have indicated that the precursor multilayers are good alignment layers for liquid crystal ...

I we have worked on nitrile terminated aliphatic diacetylene dimers. This study was initially focused on the diacetylenic dimer of undeynonitrile: HC=C)CH2)8C(triple bond)N (in order to save space and time, the shorthand notation 8 nitrile dimer was adopted. The 8 nitrile dimer is the nitrile analog to the dimer of 1,11-dodecadiyne which was shown to undergo a topochemical crosspolymerization reaction to yield a semiconducting organic polymer. In order to overcome ...

A study has been made of the use of epitaxial crystallization of polymers, epitaxial polymerization and combinatio0ns of surface interactions and reactions to produce polymer epilayers with unique structures, morphologies, and properties. Classically, epitaxial crystallization of polymers is the oriented crystallization of polymers during interaction with a crystalline substrate. Epitaxial polymerization involves the crystallization of a monomer on a crystalline substrate and subsequent polymerization initiated thermally. by ionizing radiation or ...

Epitaxial crystallization is the oriented over-growth of a substance on a crystalline substrate. The interaction between the two is usually highly specific and has profound effects on the morphology and structure of the crystallizing material. Epitaxial polymerilar science. It combines the epitaxial crystallization of a monomer on a crystallization of the monomer. A study of the vapor phase epitaxial polymerization of dissulfurnitride to polythiazyl, (SN)x, resulted in three new crystalline ...

Electron diffraction patterns were obtained from the macromonomer and cross-polymerized crystals of Poly(1,11 Dodecadiyne). The macromonomer was cast in thin (< 200 A) films from chloroform solution. Crosspolymerization resulted from subsequent exposure of these samples to Co60 - gamma radiation. Two orientations of the crosspolymerized crystals were obtained by varying the evaporation rate of solvent in the original macromonomer diposition. Thirty-six reflections for the crosspolymerized sample and eighteen reflections for ...

Diacetylene monolayers polymerized at the gas water interface have a very poor conductivity. They do however exhibit a photoconductive and doping effect which can raise the conductivity over three orders of magnitude. Because of the initially low conductivity, the polydiacetylene monolayers could at best only be considered a poor semiconductor after doping. The possibility still remains that more exotic dopants such as AsF5 that are successfully applied to other conjugated ...

Spectroscopic investigation of substituted conjugated diacetylenes and polyacetylenes and polyacetylenes dates back to the 1920's. However detailed investigation of the solid state polymerization of many of these conjugated diacetylenes is more recent. Single crystals of many of these diacetylene monomers can be polymerized by the action of (1) thermal annealing; (2) light (u.v. irradiation); (3) ionizing radiation; and (4) mechanical sheer.

Graphite fiber reinforced polymeric composites containing oriented polymer matrices have been prepared by the in situ polymerization of monomers epitaxially crystallized onto the fiber surface. All crystallizable substances studied demonstrated an orienting effect such that the direction of most rapid growth corresponds to that of the fiber axis so as to maximize the interaction with the graphite crystal edges. The Nylon 66 system was of primary interest in this study. ...
