As floodwaters rise against the riverside slope of a levee hydrostatic pressure builds within the foundation (pervious sands) of the levee. Conventional underseepage analyses are performed to estimate the potential for internal erosion because of the excess hydrostatic pressure. This study explores the use of an empirical model that uses traditional variables in addition to assessing previous levee performance and river geomorphology to estimate piping.
