Correlation of Mechanical Properties in Bulk Metallic Glasses with 27Al NMR Characteristics Dec 2011 6 pages
Authors:  Magdalena T Sandor; Laszlo J Kecskes; Qiang He; Jian Xu; Yue Wu; NORTH CAROLINA UNIV AT CHAPEL HILL DEPT OF PHYSICS AND ASTRONOMY
The full text of this report is available for sale.We report Al NMR and magnetic susceptibility measurements of Zr and ZrHf-based bulk metallic glasses (BMGs). Al NMR Knight shift shows that there exists a clear correlation between the local electronic properties at Al sites and mechanical properties. In addition, magnetic susceptibility measurements also provide clues on the influence of the electronic states, especially the strong influence of d-orbital characteristics on the mechanical properties of toughness and hardness.

Combustion Synthesis Reaction Behavior of Cold-Rolled Ni/Al and Ti/Al Multilayers Apr 2011 36 pages
Authors:  Laszlo J Kecskes; Xiaotun Qiu; Ranran Lin; Jesse H Graeter; Shengmin Guo; Jiaping Wang; ARMY RESEARCH LAB ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND MD WEAPONS AND MATERIALS RESEARCH DIRECTORATE
The full text of this report is available for sale.A two- or three-stage combustion synthesis reaction process was observed in cold-rolled Ni/Al and Ti/Al multilayer foils. The phase evolution sequence from the two foil types was studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Several exothermic peaks were identified from the DSC thermograms. Subsequently, the foils were heated to each peak temperature to identify the reaction product associated with each peak. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy analyses were used to ...
