Temporary Auditory Threshold Shifts and Performance Decrements Associated with 12 days of Noise Exposure. (A Field Study in Fire Room Spaces aboard USS ORISKANY) 15 APR 1977 39 pages
Authors:  J. C. Webster; F. G. Henry; NAVAL OCEAN SYSTEMS CENTER SAN DIEGO CA
The full text of this report is available for sale.Effects of continual 1-in-3 watches were evaluated over a 10-day period. Eight (of 39) men were found with observable threshold shifts. Dosimeter results showed that the typical noise exposure in terms of equivalent steady-state noise level in the space where most measurements were made averaged 89.9 dBA with a standard deviation of 4.5, whereas physical measures averaged 91.6 dBA with a standard deviation of 7.9. On a psychomotor four-choice serial ...

Interior Communication Requirements for New-Construction Aircraft Carriers. 19 APR 1972
Authors:  F. G. Henry; J. C. Webster; NAVAL ELECTRONICS LAB CENTER SAN DIEGO CA
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only.Voice and visual interior communication (IC) requirements for new-construction aircraft carriers were developed from an extensive study conducted aboard deployed CVA's operating in the SIXTH and SEVENTH Fleets. The functional requirements which were derived provide balance between integration and separation of IC services required to support CVA operations. Nine IC services and associated terminal types were identified and defined to accomplish the above. In the process, the number of current ...

Intraship Wire-Free and Visual Communications for Underway Replenishment Operations. 14 DEC 1970

Follow-up studies were made on the human engineering, maintainability, and reliability features of the systems. On the basis of measurements and user comments, criteria were developed for commerical transceivers and CCTV to supplement standard fixed-wire IC during CONREP/VERTREP operations. The report summarizes four years of investigation and experimental trials with references to a series of ...

Dial Telephone Traffic Analysis on Attack Aircraft Carriers (CVA's). 02 JUL 1970
Authors:  J. C. Webster; F. G. Henry; NAVAL ELECTRONICS LAB CENTER SAN DIEGO CA

This information is provided for reference purposes only.Traffic counts of dial-telephone usage were made on two CVA's operating in the Sixth Fleet, SARATOGA and JOHN F. KENNEDY, and two in the Seventh Fleet, RANGER and CONSTELLATION. The number of calls was analyzed by day, by 2-hour periods, by ship evolution, and by distribution of telephones among switchboards. The aircraft-maintenance switchboard was found to be inadequate in at least two respects: poor maintenance record and insufficient capacity. (Author) ...
