While president for only 895 days and typically remembered most for his controversial pardon of his infamous predecessor Richard Nixon, Gerald R. Ford nonetheless occupied the Oval Office during a critical time in U.S. relations with the Soviet Union and his leadership ultimately caused the decline of the diplomatic policy of detente.
