The red water produced by the Sellite purification of crude TNT has been analyzed for potentially useful organic compounds. The results can be summarized as follows: (1) Only two potentially useful organic substances are present in red water in concentrations sufficientely high to justify their recovery: 2,4-dinitrotoluene-5-sulfonic acid (2.7 weight % determined in this study, compared to 6.8 weight % reported by Radford Army Ammunition Plant), and 2,4-dinitrotoluene-3-sulfonic acid (1.2 ...
The report reviews the literature concerning the addition compounds formed by the action of a variety of bases on di- and tri-nitrobenzene derivatives. The bases fall into three classes: (1) alkoxide, sulfite, thioethoxide, thiophenoxide, azide and bicarbonate ions; (2) carbanions derived from ketones, monoitroalkanes and malonic esters; (3) aliphatic amines. The topics include mode of formation, structural assignments, spectral properties and formation constants. (Author)
The frequencies of the strong infrared absorption bands of 46 derivatives of di- and tri-nitrobenzene were measured and tabulated. The vibrational modes producing these absorptions were assigned in most cases. The effect of structure on the frequency of the absorption due to each of the modes is discussed, with emphasis on identifying unknowns. (Author)
The dissociation of the carbinol Z(NO2)2CCH2OH, according to the equation, Z(NO2)2CCH2OH + OH(-) == Z(NO2)2C + CH2(OH)2, was shown to be an equilibrium in water for six Z(F, CH3, Cl, Br, NO2CN). The equilibrium constant, K, for this reaction was measured at 10 and 25, and used to calculate delta H and delta S for the carbinol dissociation. Measurements of the ionization constant for Z(NO2)2CH were also made for water ...
The cleavage in aqueous solution of a trinitro methylcarbinol, (NO2)3CC(R1)(R2)OH to nitroform and the carbonyl compound (R1)(R2)CO was shown, for R1 R2 H and for R1 H, R2 CH3, to be a pH dependent equilibrium reaction, which is shifted toward more dissociation as the acidity is decreased. Two methods were developed for determining the equilibrium constant for the dissociation reaction, starting with the pure carbinol or with nitroform and the ...
