Progress on Artist Improvements NOV 88 30 pages
Authors:  Jane Tang; Robert R. Gamache; Bodo W. Reinisch; NORTHWEST RESEARCH ASSOCIATES INC BELLEVUE WA
The full text of this report is available for sale.Digisonde ionograms are automatically scaled in ARTIST (Automatic Real Time Ionogram Scaler with True Height). The presence of multiple Es traces had caused errors in the autoscaling. New software has been developed that allows to properly track the F trace by identifying the multiple Es echoes before the F trace identification is initiated. Multiple F traces are also identified in order to more securely identify the IF trace in the ...

Calculation of Molecular Absorption Parameters and Updating the AFGL atmospheric Line Parameter Compilation 15 SEP 88 177 pages
Authors:  Robert R. Gamache; LOWELL UNIV MA CENTER FOR ATMOSPHERIC RESEARCH
The full text of this report is available for sale. The changes and updates made that produced the 1986 version of the HITRAN database are discussed. The new format adopted and the programs and files that are distributed with the database are reviewed. We present the new parameters added to the database and the sources of the data. We briefly discuss our work on the temperature dependence of the N2-broadened halfwidths and line shifts for ozone and water vapor. The ...

Electron Density Profiles and Plasma Drift Measurements with Digital Ionosondes SEP 88
Authors:  Bodo W. Reinisch; Jurgen Buchau; Robert R. Gamache; Klaus Bibl; Gary S. Sales; LOWELL UNIV MA CENTER FOR ATMOSPHERIC RESEARCH
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only.Knowledge of the three dimensional electron density distribution and the plasma drift in the earth's ionosphere is needed for the radio communication engineer and the geophysicist. The combination of global models, e.g. the International Reference Ionosphere (IRI), modern digital ionosondes, and relatively powerful micro-computers provide the capabilities to overcome the limitations that have heretofore prevented real time ionospheric specification and improved forecasting techniques. The developing network of digital ionosondes provides ...

Status of Artist Upgrade SEP 88 50 pages
Authors:  Jane Tang; Robert R. Gamache; Eric Li; David F. Kitrosser; Bodo W. Reinisch; LOWELL UNIV MA CENTER FOR ATMOSPHERIC RESEARCH
The full text of this report is available for sale.Digisonde 256s and the AWS version DISS (Digital Ionospheric Sounding System) were installed in Argentia, Newfoundland; Wallops Island, Virginia in 1986; Bermuda in 1987; College, Alaska and Goose Bay, Labrador in 1988. The systems generally have run successfully at these stations. Ionospheric data, tape and hard copy records and system status reports are available from these mid and high latitude stations. It was realized that additional developments would improve the ...

Theoretical N2-, 02-, and Air-Broadened Halfwidths of Ozone Calculated by Quantum Fourier Transform Theory with Realistic Collision Dynamics 31 DEC 85
Authors:  Robert R. Gamache; Richard W. Davies; Laurence S. Rothman; AIR FORCE GEOPHYSICS LAB HANSCOM AFB MA
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only.Collision broadened halfwidths of ozone are evaluated with nitrogen, oxygen, and air as the perturbing gases. It is important to consider more realistic collision dynamics in the calculations. By replacing the classical path trajectories by linear trajectories with constant velocities chosen to give the equations of motion exact to first order in time we develop the interruption function in terms of the actual distance of closest approach determined by the ...

Electron Density Profiles from Automatically Scaled Digital Ionograms. The Artist's Valley Solution JUL 85
Authors:  Robert R. Gamache; William T. Kersey; Bodo W. Reinisch; LOWELL UNIV MA CENTER FOR ATMOSPHERIC RESEARCH
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only.Electron density 'true height' profiles are calculated from automatically scaled Digisonde ionograms. The profile algorithm uses the modified polynomial fitting method separately for the E and the F region profile calculations. A new approach to considering the transition region between the E and F layers allows to determine the F profile with good accuracy from the ordinary echo trace. The total electron content between the peak of the E layer ...

Automatic Scaling of Digisonde Ionograms Test and Evaluation Report SEP 1982
Authors:  Bodo W. Reinisch; Jane S. Tang; Robert R. Gamache; LOWELL UNIV RESEARCH FOUNDATION MA
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only.Ionograms contain as basic information the virtual range versus frequency. The Digisonde 128PS also measures amplitude, phase, polarization, incidence angle and the spectral signature of the echoes. This allows automatic scaling of the ionograms and conversion to vertical electron density profiles. This report discusses the automatic scaling of some 8000 Digisonde ionograms from the Goose Bay Ionospheric Observatory (64.6N geomagnetic) of the Air Force Geophysics Laboratory. These ionograms display a ...

Measuring the Antenna Pattern of the HF Heater Antenna in Puerto Rico MAR 1982
Authors:  Bodo W. Reinisch; Robert W. Gowell; James Moore; Jackie B. Waaramaa; Robert R. Gamache; LOWELL UNIV RESEARCH FOUNDATION MA
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only. The radiation pattern of the 4 x 8 element array of the Arecibo HF heater antenna was measured with a Digisonde onboard AFGL's KC 135 airplane.
