Our research interests focus on improving nonlinear optical materials, developing microstructuring techniques to access new wavelength regions and new applications, and fabricating devices for high-power visible generation, ultra-fast optical interactions, mid-IR generation, and optical signal processing. This program has continued the development of microstructured nonlinear optical materials and quasi-phase-matched devices based on those materials. The material systems investigated, periodically-poled ferroelectrics, especially lithium niobate (PPLN) and lithium tantalate (PPLT), and orientation-patterned ...

Low-pressure hydride vapor phase epitaxy (HVPE) is being used for the regrowth of thick GaAs on orientation-patterned templates for nonlinear optical frequency conversion. We have achieved epitaxial growth rates of 200um/h and produced millimeter-thick films in 10-h-long growth runs. A critical problem in the HVPE regrowth of orientation-patterned GaAs is the preservation of the original patterned structure - during thick growth, the domain walls often bend and annihilate. Measurements indicated ...

We demonstrate an optical parametric oscillator (OPO) based on GaAs pumped with linearly polarized and circularly polarized light and show that the relative OPO thresholds agree with theoretical expectations. For the circularly polarized pump, the threshold was as low as for the [111]-linearly polarized pump case. The pump was also passed through a Lyot depolarizer to produce pseudo-depolarized light, and the OPO threshold in this case was only 22% higher ...

We report 10-ps correlated photon pair generation in periodically-poled reverse-proton-exchange lithium niobate waveguides with integrated mode demultiplexer at a wavelength of 1.5 micrometers and a clock of 10 GHz. Using superconducting single photon detectors, we observed a coincidence to accidental count ratio (CAR) as high as 4000. The developed photon-pair source may find broad application in quantum information systems as well as quantum entanglement experiments.

We demonstrate a new source of frequency-tunable THz wave packets based on parametric down-conversion process in orientation-patterned GaAs (OP-GaAs) that produces microW-level THz average powers at the repetition rate of 100 MHz. The OP-GaAs crystal is pumped by a compact all-fiber femtosecond laser operating at the wavelength of 2 microns. Such combination of fiber laser and OP-GaAs technologies promises a practical source of THz radiation which should be suitable for ...
