Horizontal Variability of Ocean Skin Temperature from Airborne Infrared Imagery 25 OCT 2004
Authors:  Christopher J. Zaapa; James B. Edson; WOODS HOLE OCEANOGRAPHIC INSTITUTION MA DEPT OF APPLIED OCEAN PHYSICS AND ENGINEERING
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only. The first objective is to use an airborne infrared imager to produce both overview maps and high-resolution time series of thermal variability over the CBLAST study area. The second objective is to combine these data with measurements by other investigators to determine the extent to which horizontal variability in surface temperature is related to atmospheric and sub-surface phenomena.

System Architecture and Operational Issues of Ocean Observatories as Exemplified by the Martha's Vineyard Coastal Observatory, A Cabled Platform for Long-Term Studies 2002
Authors:  Marguerite K. McElroy; James B. Edson; Wade R. McGillis; Thomas Austin; Michael J. Purcell; WOODS HOLE OCEANOGRAPHIC INSTITUTION MA
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only.During the 20th century the study of the oceans has moved from episodic sampling of organisms and the physical characteristics of the water to an attempt to elucidate the dynamic processes occurring not just within the water column but extending into both the benthic and atmospheric boundary layers Attempts to extrapolate from these point observations, to understand and model these processes have demonstrated the need for continuous high resolution synoptic ...

Spectral Characteristics of the Marine Surface Layer 12 APR 2000
Authors:  James B. Edson; WOODS HOLE OCEANOGRAPHIC INSTITUTION MA DEPT OF APPLIED OCEAN PHYSICS AND ENGINEERING
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only. The goal of this research is to gain a better understanding of the flow characteristics of the marine surface layers, including the coupling at the air-sea interface. Specifically, the research focuses on the influence of ocean waves on turbulent processes, especially those involved in stress-wave interactions. The long range goal of this research is to develop new and/or revise old theoretical descriptions of turbulence, such that ...

The Impact of Sea-Spray Droplets on the Surface Energy Budget Under High Wind Speeds Over Waves 01 NOV 97
The project involved an investigation of the effects of evaporating sea-spray under high wind conditions. These investigations were accomplished using a interactive Eulerian-Lagrangian model developed by the PI. The interactive model was validated using data collected during the 1988 CLUSE program. This work has demonstrated that the combined model accurately simulates the turbulent transport of evaporating droplets. In additions, this paper advanced the state-of-the-art in droplet research by demonstrating that ...

Spectral Characteristics of the Marine Surface Layer 22 MAY 96
Authors:  James B. Edson; WOODS HOLE OCEANOGRAPHIC INSTITUTION MA DEPT OF APPLIED OCEAN PHYSICS AND ENG INEERING
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only. The goal of this research is to gain a better understanding of the processes affecting the near-surface' flow in marine surface layer. The first objective is to improve our understanding of flux profile relationships over the ocean using our mean and flux measurements and the TKE budget equation. This has involved an investigation of the applicability of similarity theory to over- ocean% measurement in order to determine these functions and ...

TESTING OF IONOSPHERIC ABSORPTION MEASUREMENT EQUIPMENT AND STUDY OF IMPROVED TECHNIQUES FOR DATA COLLECTION. APR 1963
Authors:  James B. Edson; Samuel C. Goldman; AEROSPACE RESEARCH INC BOSTON MASS
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only.A transistorized Riometer Mark II absorption measuring equipment was tested at the Central Radio Propagation Laboratory, National Bureau of Standards, Boulder, Colorado, with entirely satisfactory results. Studies were conducted and techniques developed to provide automatic calibration and digital output capability to the Riometer Mark II. A prototype automatic cali brator was built and satisfactorily operated. The requirements and techniques of digital data conversion and recording were investigated, and a suit ...

OPTICAL STUDIES OF THE JET FLAME OF THE V-2 MISSILE IN FLIGHT, OCT 1949
Authors:  James B. Edson; BALLISTIC RESEARCH LABS ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND MD
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only.Generation of thrust by burning of fuel outside the missile is among the jet phenomena found in this study of the flying V2 rocket. Other items are the explanation of an abrupt change in jet structure at sonic missile velocity and a fishtail jet form at supersonic missile velocities. Photometry of motion picture spectrograms has yielded the change in intensity of jet emissions as the missile rises. It appears that ...

TRACKING TELESCOPE FUNDAMENTALS, 23 AUG 1948
Authors:  James B. Edson; BALLISTIC RESEARCH LABS ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND MD
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only. This report assembles a foundation of simple basic information useful in the design and operation of tracking telescopes. Some topics discussed are: Appearance of the missile compared to planets; conditions for optimum missile visibility; telescope size requirements; effects of the atmosphere; station site selection; tracking and photographic techniques. Construction and installation at White Sands Proving Ground of the first tracking telescope is described. (Author)
