CORROSION BEHAVIOR OF PHOSPHORUS-IMPLANTED FE-6CR AND FE-18CR AMORPHOUS ALLOYS, JAN 1987
Authors:  N. R. Sorensen; R. B. Diegle; S. T. Picraux
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only. The passivation of phosphorus-implanted Fe-6Cr and Fe-18Cr alloys has been investigated in 0.1 N sulfuric acid with and without the addition of chloride ions. The implantation process causes a change in microstructure from crystalline to amorphous as the total P fluence increases. Implantation with 1.5 X 10(super 17) P/sq cm to form peak concentrations of about 20 atomic percent (at %) increases the passivation rate and decreases the total charge ...

Corrosion of Proposed Canister Materials in Salt Repositories 84
Authors:  R. B. Diegle; N. R. Sorensen; R. S. Glass; SANDIA NATIONAL LABS ALBUQUERQUE NM
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only. All tests performed to date involving the corrosion behavior of TiCode-12 indicate that this alloy is a suitable choice for the containment of nuclear wastes. No stress corrosion cracking of TiCode-12 occurred; HE was observed, as well as pitting, but only under conditions that represent severe overtesting. Such overtest conditions are not expected in any repository. A better understanding of the mechanisms involved in the corrosion behavior of TiCode-12 has ...

Chemical Properties of Metallic Glasses 83
Authors:  R. B. Diegle; SANDIA NATIONAL LABS ALBUQUERQUE NM
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only.Research into the chemical properties of metallic glasses has revealed promising behavior in the areas of corrosion resistance and catalysis. Metallic glasses containing a film-forming element exhibit resistance to uniform and localized corrosion that is superior to that of many crystalline stainless steels. This resistance is due to the presence of passive films that are enriched in the film-forming element. Cr is particularly effective, especially if P is present as ...

The Corrosion Resistance of Glassy Alloys 83
Authors:  R. B. Diegle; N. R. Sorensen; T. Tsuru; R. M. Latanision; BATTELLE COLUMBUS LABS OH
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only.Progress has been made toward development of methods for using glassy alloys as filaments, coatings, and three-dimensional components. Broad exploitation of the corrosion resistant nature of glassy alloys is not yet possible, primarily because these methods are still not perfected. It is anticipated that in the next five to ten years, corrosion resistant glassy alloys will be utilized in a variety of specialized applications.

Low-Cost Glassy Coatings--New Armor Against Corrosion JUL 82
Authors:  R. B. Diegle
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only.Glassy coatings can be prepared by other, possibly lower-cost, techniques, such as electrodeposition, sputtering, ion plating, laser glazing, and ion implantation. An especially good example may be electrodeposited glassy coatings, which could represent a breakthrough in commercial use of an important new class of corrosion-resistant materials. Electrodeposition is easy, fast, and productive of results comparable to coatings prepared by rapid liquid quenching.

New Crevice Corrosion Test Cell MAR 82
Authors:  R. B. Diegle
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only.An electrochemical cell was developed to monitor crevice corrosion in chemical process systems. It consists of a prepared crevice containing an anode which is connected through a zero resistance ammeter to a freely exposed cathode. A string bridge provides a solution path between the crevice region and a reference electrode that is attached externally to the cell. Experiments were performed with AISI 304 stainless steel and Grades 2 and 7 ...

Glassy Alloys--New Class of Corrosion Resistant Coatings JAN 82
Authors:  R. B. Diegle
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only. This paper reviews the results of research into the corrosion behavior of glassy alloys prepared by techniques other than liquid quenching. Techniques that are considered are sputtering, ion plating, electrode position, laser glazing, and ion implantation. Certain compositions of glassy alloys offer excellent pitting resistance and extremely low corrosion rates (less than 1 micrometers/yr) with as little as 2 or 3 percent of chromium. Therefore, they are ideal candidates for ...

Investigating the Effects of Low Temperature Annealing of Amorphous Corrosion Resistant Alloys. NOV 1980
Authors:  R. B. Diegle; D. M. Lineman; BATTELLE COLUMBUS LABS OH
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only. This research program was conducted in two phases. Annealing-induced changes in corrosion and mechanical properties of amorphous alloys were investigated during 1979-80, whereas earlier studies during 1977-1979 involved characterizing the localized corrosion resistance and feasibility of sputtering such alloys. Annealing, performed at temperatures up to that causing crystallization, produced embrittlement of Fe32Ni36Cr14P12B6 at 100-200 C, as measured by bending. Embittlement preceded crystallization, which initiated during a substantially higher temperature of ...

Crevice Corrosion of Glassy Fe-Ni-Cr-P-B Alloys JUL 80
Authors:  R. B. Diegle
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only.Crevice corrosion of glassy Fe-Ni-Cr-P-B alloys in NaCl electrolyte was investigated as a means of differentiating between initiation-related and propagation-related corrosion behavior. Specimens containing deformation-induced surface microcracks experienced a transient type of crevice attack at potentials only slightly anodic to the free corrosion potential. However, the crevices widened into pit shaped voids and quickly passivated, apparently as a result of ingress of bulk electrolyte. Separate experiments with alloys cold worked ...

Corrosion Studies of Aluminum, Copper and Steel Under Simulated Solar Collector Conditions MAR 80
Authors:  R. B. Diegle; BATTELLE COLUMBUS LABS OH
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only.the program included three separate tasks, as follows: review of the state of the art of collector corrosion; study of aqueous corrosion in multimetallic systems under simulated solar collector operating conditions; determination of the interactions between constituents in various kinds of waters and chemical antifreeze additives. this paper describes results from the second task; results from the other two will appear in separate publications. this research involved characterizing corrosion of ...

LOCALIZED CORROSION OF AMORPHOUS Fe-Ni-Cr-P-B ALLOYS JUN 79
Authors:  R. B. Diegle
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only.experiments were performed with a series of amorphous fe-ni-cr-p-b alloys of varying cr content to characterize their susceptibility to crevice corrosion. potentiodynamic and potentiostatic polarization of freely exposed specimens was performed in simulated crevice solutions (1m nacl at ph 1-7, and 6% fecl(sub 3) at ph 1.4). crevice corrosion experiments were conducted in an artificial crevice cell. polarization in the simulated crevice electrolytes indicated that alloys containing 2 to 16 ...

Investigating Localized Corrosion and Sputtering Feasibility of Amorphous Chromium-Containing Alloys. MAY 1979
Authors:  R. B. Diegle; D. M. Lineman; BATTELLE COLUMBUS LABS OHIO
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only. For the past two years research has been directed toward understanding and utilizing the corrosion resistant properties of amorphous alloys based on the composition Fe-Ni-Cr-P-B. The research had two objectives: (a) separating initiation from propagation stages of localized corrosion phenomena and characterizing the tendency for each; and (b) developing a sputtering technique as a means for preparing these alloys. Propagation of localized corrosion was studied in prepared crevices, which circumvented ...

THE ROLE OF FILM RUPTURE DURING SLOW STRAIN-RATE STRESS CORROSION CRACKING TESTING 79
Authors:  R. B. Diegle; W. K. Boyd; BATTELLE COLUMBUS LABS OHIO
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only.the unique nature of the slow strain-rate technique for stress corrrosion testing is discussed in terms of its ability to maintain repetitive rupture of corrosion films. it is first shown that the surfaces of alloys of engineering importance tend to be covered with films under electrochemical conditions that promote stress corrosion cracking (scc). the relevance of this observation to conditions prevailing directly at the stress corrosion crack tip is considered ...

Investigating Localized Corrosion and Sputtering Feasibility of Amorphous Chromium-Containing Alloys. APR 1978
Authors:  R. B. Diegle; D. M. Lineman; W. K. Boyd; BATTELLE COLUMBUS LABS OHIO
The full text of this report is not available and therefore is not for sale. This information is provided for reference purposes only. This report summarizes progress in understanding the nature of localized corrosion of amorphous Fe-Ni-Cr-P-B alloys, and in developing a technique to sputter deposit these alloys. Although Cr improves their resistance to crevice and crevice attack, it is not necessary: 0 at. percent Cr melt spun alloys exhibited resistance to localized corrosion which was greatly superior to that of T304 stainless steel. Although the alloys can be made to crevice corrode, ...
